I generally don't go for the "floofy" type Cats, but this one is fantastic! Nice flowers.

What do you mean by floofy…?…:scratchhead:..I'm just starting to get familiar with orchid word terms...:)

quiltergal 01-25-2008 01:43 PM

 Super! This is what I call the dream orchid! It is magnificent for a species forged by nature. I bought a compot a couple of years ago and the plants are now 12cm. Long wait until they bloom. Congrats again!

That lip is wild!! Love those colors together - beautiful

TikiGeorge 01-25-2008 08:59 PM

Cool catt ya got there! It looks kinda laid back in a "I aint your boring ole pink/white/lavender cat". Thanks for posting your plant and your talent for growing.

charmbutterfly 01-25-2008 09:20 PM

Whoa!! Get a load of that lip!! Its beautifullllllllll

cb977 01-25-2008 09:36 PM

That lip is amazing! Is that in all dowiana or just the variety you have? I want one!

DebsC 01-25-2008 10:10 PM

Fabulous!! Gorgeous! Stunning! There just are no words to describe the beauty of this species. Yum Yum!!!

Some people consider C. aurea a separate species (see Withner), and I am in that camp, myself. C. aurea breeds very differently from C. dowiana. For starters, C. aurea is recessive for overall flower colour but more dominant for lip colour and venation. C. dowiana always affects the colour of the sepals and petals of a hybrid. In some cases, it intensifies red and purple tones, and sometimes muddies up the colour of lavendars and pinks. When bred with whites, the yellow comes through. C. aurea comes from Columbia and C. dowiana from Costa Rica. In all likelyhood, we are actually looking at two species who have very recently (geologically speaking) split from each other.

As for the plant in question, yes that is a *very* nice lip. C. aurea is known for having more extensive and stunning venation on the outer lip than the C. dowiana, which is known for a rich, velvety red color and golden veins inside the lip.

Both plants require a bit of neglect over winter and plenty of light to bloom their best. Congrats on blooming a relatively finicky species so well!

Thanks for all your great remarks and comments.
I bought this plant in Germany from a Colombian nursery import. The price was not just the cheapest but well worth. It bloomed in october for a second time and the flowers were much better than one year ago.

Hi euplusia…:waving

I bought my little seedling a few days ago ( I love these dowiana var.) and I’m nervous to plant it up. For some reason cattleya types don’t seem to like me (I think I’m not letting them dry out enough before each watering) could you please if it’s not to much trouble could you just give me a simple run down of what you have your orchid planted in and what size of pot, how much light. I’m pretty sure you grow yours indoors but I maybe able to make adjustments to mine grown outdoors. Thanks Jo Ann

Your cat is beautiful, good job. I just got my baby 2 1/2" pot from Exotic Orchids of Maui at the WOC. I can't wait for mine to get BS. Any idea how long I have to wait???

Roughly 4-7 years, depending on culture.

Hi JoAn. How's your Rosita doing? Was it a selfing or clone? I purchased 3, two small and 1 big...two are selfings, so I'm not sure if they will come out peloric. The other is a clone.

Tim.

Very, very nice. I like it but as I have say previously difficult to grow in Belgium because the lack of sun during the 2 last summers. Euplusia could you give us some details about your culture conditions?
