Help! My miltassia is trying to climb out of the pot!

Hi guys, i got this miltassia royal robe earlier this year. Got it to bloom again recently for me and now it's sending out new shoots. (one's circled in the picture and there's another one hiding behind another bulb where the arrow of pointing). I'm starting to smell some funny mouldy smell when i water it and i figure it's time to bite the bullet and repot it. Right now is in straight sphag moss. Only problem is, ask the new growths are coming out of the pot. Hire do I pot this without burying all the other bulbs?http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/09/a2apezuq.jpg

He's one of the entire plant...

Any suggestions on how to handle this? Should i repot it into the same pot?

This shoot on the opposite side of the other new growths shown from before is also coming out of the pot... http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/09/a7ubyma3.jpg

Here's a better photo of both the new shoots from that first picture... http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/09/a2ema2u5.jpg

They are at such different levels, I'm not sure how to pot this... Plus there isn't enough humidity here the exposed for tips are starting to look a little "burnt"...maybe i can be missing them more often? Idk...

Dante1709 08-09-2014 12:39 AM

Considering there are two growths, on completely opposite sides, why not just divide the thing and repot them more easily?

james mickelso 08-09-2014 12:44 AM

I second the idea.

Atzau 08-09-2014 12:48 AM

Ummm...cause I'm a total wuss and with the exception on removing a back bulb a couple of days ago to repot my mom's oncidium, have never divided any orchid yet! Lol...plus... I still don't know how to deal with the two new growths on the same side...

ilikeorchids 08-09-2014 05:04 AM

Ummm, if you want it to be a big specimen plant, you could transfer it ti a bigger pot and pot it at an angle where all the roots are on the media and all of the bulbs are equally aligned above the media. Or, you could just divide each with 3-4 bulbs or more and have 2 plants :)

Optimist 08-09-2014 09:46 AM

Well it is on a rhyzome, as you can see. I just put mine in a bigger pot and built up the bark on one side higher than the other. Or mount it on an upwardly swooping piece of wood then burry that in a pot of bark. Hate the idea of cutting so nice a plant in two. Every time I have divided, one or both sides eventually dies.

james mickelso 08-09-2014 10:24 AM

You can just repot this at a slightly more pronounced angle with the oldest pbulb down into the media. It won't hurt it a bit unless you keep the entire mass too wet. The oldest partially buried pbulbs won't be hurt at all.

Daethen 08-09-2014 10:40 AM

This guy is a climber. It would require daily watering probably, but why not mount it. It wants to climb, let it climb.

Atzau 08-09-2014 01:58 PM

I'm not sure if be able to upkeep the mount. Not to humid in this area and I'm forgetful! Lol...I'd hate to split this guy up too but if I just tilt and pot, one of the new growths won't be in media... Maybe i can just pop off the bulbs on highest rhizome (the ones attached to the shoot circled in neon pink) and put the rest trying to accommodate the other new leads.. But then that division will only have 2 or 3 mature pbulbs...

Atzau 08-09-2014 02:20 PM

Maybe like this?
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/10/hygemana.jpg
And then the rest of the plant into another pot...http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/10/derusepa.jpg...it'll still have 2 leads on opppsite sides though...

Atzau 08-09-2014 02:40 PM

But then the new growths on this division, http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/10/ura8yqu7.jpg will be super slanted... It'll right itself won't it?

Would this be too small of a division?

Purple_phal_gal13 08-09-2014 02:54 PM

I'd say if its climbing, let it. It's what it wants to do. I have one like this that's a cross that is doing something similar. I just repotted it with fresh media and let it be.

Purple_phal_gal13 08-09-2014 02:55 PM

But you could try to get two plants outta it :)

Ya, i think my mom will be pretty happy if i did! Lol. Well, i figure i have to repot anyways cause the media smells funky... And the roots climbing out of the pot look so sad and dry... Crispy almost! Lol

Purple_phal_gal13 08-09-2014 03:10 PM

One more thing, of you do repot and leave it be, you could try increasing thr humidity near the exposed roots or spray them when they are getting dry. If not, it'll sort ittself out.

Atzau 08-09-2014 08:35 PM

Ok, so here's the divisions... Not potted up yet though...http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/10/apy7ujyq.jpg

Really? I like the climbers. Reminds me that they don't live in pots in the wild  I have an Onc. in spike that is climbing out of the pot so much that his roots started to dig into one of my Paph. pots. We're talking about a foot of distance between the 2!

Yup! Here are the roots as of today. They just keep getting longer and longer.

Helene 08-26-2014 04:49 PM

Interesting to read, have never divided any plants (actually just repotted my first plant ever last week…).

Hope both plants are gonna be fine, and that you get two beautiful plants :) Please keep us updated :)

Yeah, and Bulbofett: love those roots :D

Ferns Daddy 08-26-2014 08:05 PM

Thats one set of roots !

Atzau 08-27-2014 01:47 AM

Both plants are doing okay right now. The new shoots in both of them are continuing to grow so I'm hoping that means things are going well. In fact, ones of the newer pseudobulbs on the larger division is growing a spike! Yeah! And my mom is happy she got a new plant. ;)

Atzau 09-02-2014 11:43 AM

Here's a pic of the new spike! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/09/02/ujubatuv.jpg:D
