Cyp Parville in flower

This has got to be my favorite just now. The flowers are quite small and all the more cute for it :) Every time I go in my greenhouse it makes me smile.

Credit for the photos goes to my hubby.

The two extreme closeups show the spotting inside the pouch on one, and the glandular hairs on the back of the flower in the other.

Very nice!

These are gorgeous, Rosie, and Mr. R's photography is stunning. The flowers remind me of the darker forms of Cyp. parviflorum.

Jennyfleur 05-19-2013 04:22 PM

Gorgeous and great shots too - Bravo Hubby :)

RosieC 05-19-2013 04:47 PM

Thanks Carrie, Ron and Jenny :)

Ron, the colour darkened up noticeably as they opened. They were quite pale initially, but it took about a week for the dorsal to lift from the pouch and during that time it got darker and darker. I have found some pictures of this someone else posted on Flickr and they are paler, but also taken before the dorsal has lifted (to be honest I started to wonder if it ever would).

I've been looking into the name of this. It seems that it's listed as Cypripedium Pubescens Parville ® a registered trademark somewhere.

I can't quite work out pubescens. RHS seem to have it listed as a natural hybrid (but not sure of what) but also have a parviflorum var pubescens listed.

I hadn't really looked into the name of this before, I think I have a memory that I might have been told that this was a man-made hybrid of something that also occurs as a natural hybrid, but not 100% that that was this orchid :dunno: I might have to ask the guy who sold it to me, he's quite good at responding to emails.

C. pubescens is another name for parviflorum and now listed as a variety of parviflorum, both of which were once synonymous with C. calceolus. C. parviflorum is now listed as the correct name for the American variety of this orchid and has itself two varieties, makasin and pubescens, very difficult to distinguish from each other.

The seller I bought this from has confirmed that it is C parviflorum var pubescens and that the name Parville is a trade name from Garden Orchids who bread them and supply him. Garden Orchids seem to like using trade names rather than real names.

Great pics, what a great Cyp. I wonder if I can grow some for my apartment bldg's garden. Nah, some one will probably just rip them out and walk off with them.

Thanks everyone, and thanks Tindo for bumping this thread up.

This one was just back in my mind as I submitted one of these pics for the calendar competition :)

It is in flower again now, but didn't do as well this year. Only two flowers.

Gorgeous!

RosieC 05-27-2014 05:30 AM

Thanks Sonya.

I love this one. The flowers are quite tiny but so beautiful. I just hope the lack of flowers this year is down to the mild winter and not declining health. It has plenty of growths which didn't flower so :crossfing
