I am a new member and I live in Beaverton, Oregon. I recently bought a very nice cattleya.
I am looking for suggestions on how to take care of it. I have some cymbidium and phalaenopsis and I am Ok with them. Thanks |

That is a magnificent presentation.
The mount is wood based with moss enhancements on a pool of water in a dish to aid in moisture and humidity.... the flowers are lovely with vivid colors, texture and form of a miniature Cattleya ---------- Post added at 09:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:32 PM ---------- this is a cross between a Sophronitis and a Cattleya so you can follow the Baker's Cattleya culture. Gorgeous presentation - I like that there is the added element of standing water - that really added to the beauty for me!

It is already mounted when I bought it. According to the tag, this is mounted 2 years ago. It is not growing season yet. So I shouldn't water it too often. Correct? This is a picture of the website: |

The owner mounted in 2010. The plan did very well on the mount. I love it and hope it will do well for me.

I have a question about the hydromount for all of you experienced orchid growers. I haev never mounted an orchid before. I love the way this mount presents the orchid.
What orchids do you think this would work well with? Are there catts that it wouldn't work with? Varities of catts that would work better? If mounting catts on it, would they get too heavy or need to be re-mounted when new eyes and growths got going? Before I invest money in the mount I would love to work these questions out in my mind. I would greatly appreciate help. :) |
I'm interested too. I would think more compact ones and maybe ones that like a drier habitat.
I would like to know if the mount seeps water at a fast rate or slowly so that it will hold water for a few days or more. Or does it run all over. We had some unglazed small pots that were the same idea but water leaked out of the bottom of them too fast and not as much out the sides as was intended. Using a mount like this will work for any cattleya really. Ju st adjust the size of the mount based on how strong a grower u catt is and how tall its leaf & PB gets. I am not a fan of moss at all so I wouldn't really recommend it at all. Catts are epiphytes and do actually like to dry out before watering. So despite having to water more often when its hot they will establish and grow very well. If you want to put humidity trays under it that's fine too. But watering would probably best by a spray bottle. I am pro natural mounts like drift woods & fern bark; but we all can get creative too :)

I have this Catt also. Have actually divided it 3 times. I started out growing it S/H but once I started dividing it, potted it up using lava rock. Winter while indoors I grow under lights and ease up slightly on the watering. Late April it goes outside. It gets direct sun early to mid morning and again from 6 pm to dark. Rest of the day is dappled sunlight. I've found it to be an easy grower and blooms a couple times a year also.

You said that you keep your indoors during the winter under lights. I plan to keep my outside during the summer/early fall and will bring it in after that. Does it need much light during the winter time?
Also, you mentioned it blooms couple times a year. Since my bloom already, is next time around early fall? Thanks |
