shahrezsyed 11-06-2011 04:11 AM

2 weeks left to arrival. :S :O

camille1585 11-06-2011 05:31 AM

Wow, that's a lot!! Did you order a mix of different things or focused on specific genera?

It's never good is it? LOL I have 20 arriving this coming week.

Daethen 11-06-2011 07:27 AM

Been a while since I ordered that many at once. Just did a repot on 50 or last week. That kind of curbed the interest in buying too many at once.

I was thinking about getting another dozen before it gets too cold to order. But I went on vacation for a week and when I got back a few days ago I had all 60+ orchids to water. Took me 2 hours (I usually divide them into 3 watering shifts throughout the week), and I decided that maybe I'll only get 5-6 new ones...

Paul Mc 11-06-2011 08:53 AM

When I start ordering like that I find that I have the shakes... LOL...

peeper 11-06-2011 10:17 AM

OH MY!!! What fun!!! That's gonna be fun to unpack!

Look at this one... and this one... and that one!!! OH!! look at THIS one!!!

Yeah... I would more than likely do that... but the Hubby might freak!!

What all did you order?! Needing to swoon over here!! Where did you order from?

  OMG, you sound just like me when I open a package. I only order 5-6 at a time though, so I can't even imagine how wonderful it is to unpack 50! I think it would be overwhelming even!

zxyqu 11-06-2011 10:24 AM

I can't imagine unpacking 50, not to mention paying for them! Should be an awesome photo session. You'll be swamped in newspaper and packing peanuts

peeper 11-06-2011 10:27 AM

PACKING PEANUTS! OMG! This last shipment I got... and it was only 3... not 50!! there were packing peanuts on the floor and my dog was going NUTS!

That is going to be just so much fun to "jump" into!

woah... the repotting stage is going to be insane!

speaking of re-potting.... *wanders off*

ezil 11-06-2011 09:44 PM

X-mas and all the holidays wrapped up in one! It sounds like you're in for a great time. Do you have a welcoming/repotting squad lined up already?

ryrycochinco 11-06-2011 10:08 PM

Thats bigger than my whole collection.......:wow:chicken:llama:AWSOME!

greenbean 11-07-2011 12:27 AM

That's about as big as my whole collection! I wish I had the space to order that many at once! (not to mention the time to repot...er, and the money....)

shahrezsyed 11-09-2011 04:23 AM

They're arriving on monday!!!

shahrezsyed 11-09-2011 04:29 AM

Im actually a pre-med student right so I have access to my uni's botanical gardens so i don't have to pay for extra space (if i need it), repotting and fertilizing supplies or laminar flow hoods and other stuff for flasking, etc.

camille1585 11-09-2011 06:18 AM

Geez you are lucky! I f I want some space in one of the greenhouses at my university I have to pay for it!

shahrezsyed 11-09-2011 06:23 AM

I just got a call from my university that I got my permit for research on tissue culture. As part of this, I'm ordering 50 more (exclusively for college can't bring em home). What do you guys suggest. Any favorites lists that would help me choose...:P Gawd I'm loving this! I remember when i asked for the permit, the first question was "aren't you supposed to be a pre-med student?"

peeper 11-09-2011 08:52 AM

I think that you should concentrate on one particular alliance. Buying different species, from that alliance, and studying some aspect of it. I would say find something that interests you that's isn't particularly widely distributed.

I still want to know what you got in the first 50....
and I would say good luck, this is quite a project... but you seem to have this totally under control!
Lots of work! Have fun!

shahrezsyed 11-09-2011 09:00 AM

Generally, I ordered 20 Vandas, 20 dendrobiums and 10 phals. I am loving this...:p
But for my personal collection, it sucks when I have to order supplies. Its like a 75$ order with 190$ shipping...:O (to Pakistan)
The college won't give me supplies for personal use.

cythaenopsis 11-11-2011 11:57 AM

Wow, this is terrific, being able to order these through your college and not have to find places to put them in your home. :)

Of course, once the project is done, no harm in taking a few for yourself, right? ;)

Camille I have four groups of orchids. A day between each group. Problem with this system is you think, oh sure another orchid can fit in this group. Lol

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 03:02 PM

btw camille,...yes I can!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 03:08 PM

But as of now, supplies for the 50 orchids I'm personally receiving is proving to be EXPENSIVE. I order my orchids bare rooted so I could plant them in whatever I want to so I have to get supplies with 100$ shipping!!!

Wrebbitrocks 11-11-2011 03:48 PM

theres no florists shops at all in kuwait? maybe you could go to a florist and share a shipping charge? you're very lucky to have access to your schools greenhouse

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 04:03 PM

I LIVE IN PAKISTAN. Pakistan wasn't there in the drop down list so I randomly chose kuwait. And we we do have florists and garden centers but no orchids or orchid supplies...

I notice that you have to repeat that a lot since you can't get the right flag. In your user profile you can type in your location and it will appear on all your posts right under the date you joined. In that case you could just do away with the flag to avoid confusion.

Daethen 11-11-2011 04:25 PM

Could you arrange with the university to let you order some stuff with their order to cut down on the shipping expense or just buy some of theirs?

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 04:47 PM

I am getting a lot less shipping on the orchids. (1$/kg) but its the potting supplies that are costly. 50$ order is fine but with 170$ shipping...:O

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 05:27 PM

PEOPLE THERE IS SOME BAD NEWS!!!
The shipment has been delayed!!!
Its expected to arrive in the first week of december. But stay tuned cuz when its gonna come its gonna be AWESOME.

Bud 11-11-2011 05:53 PM

I am confused: are you in Kuwait or in Pakistan? Does your country allow orchids to be shipped in bulks? I mean if I had 20 or more orchids shipment: my country will hold it for customs reasons...and I have a lot of explaining to do and a lot of receipts and phyto certificates to produce...

camille1585 11-11-2011 05:58 PM

Look at his signature in his post: Pakistan! ;)

shahrezsyed 11-11-2011 08:16 PM

THANK YOU CAMILLE! and @bud yes it does allow it as I'm ordering it through a company that orders them by the thousands weekly.

Vanda lover 11-11-2011 10:06 PM

That would be so much fun! What did you get? Some of everything, I hope! I want to do that.

Wrebbitrocks 11-11-2011 11:20 PM

sorry, didnt realize. thanks for clarifying. maybe, as a temporary solution, they may carry bark mulch for the outside garden at your local garden center. it could work im assuming? or just mount on pieces of wood

shahrezsyed 11-12-2011 05:35 AM

@webbitrocks
I have it under control don't worry...;)

shahrezsyed 11-12-2011 10:34 AM

Well...I just got denied my grant because the dean read this post and declared my demands 'not in the better interest of the department'.
....;((...
