New arrivals!

Ok, so I couldn't wait long enough for these to be Travelling Companions for the project plant - I'll just have to get a couple more (already have those picked out!) to come along for the ride.

Today a nice big box arrived from Burnhams:

Dendrobium senile:

Sophronitis coccinea:

and Scaphyglottis violacea:

and to balance out the super minis... (and before I run out of space and say I don't have room for it!) a
Dendrobium spectabile! Can you say over-compensation?!

To round things off, Gomesa crispa as well.

As you can see, I am really branching out - these are the first Dends I've ever tried. Also, the first Cattleya alliance plants I've had since I had Catts back in the 1980s in the US!

PS. The Den. spectabile is a young plant, so not so very big at the moment. The theory is that young plants are more adaptable (like young children) and I can hopefully get this one used to slightly cooler temperatures than they normally call for.

Wish me luck!

:cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Way too funny!!!

You picked some great 'chids! I love them all

shakkai 07-31-2007 11:42 AM

I hope they're happy here and will flower for me. But its good to try new things! And its all because of you guys here showing me all of the wonderful stuff out there!!

gmdiaz 07-31-2007 11:53 AM

I am so laughing. . .love it!

I can hardly wait to place my project order and am shopping traveling companions too! I am barely holding out. . .Buah ha ha.

I LOVE all the orchids you picked out! Especially the "senile" one. I need one of those for my co-lection.

I am really wanting one of those big exo-terra terrariums. . .the extra large size. I might run into town today to see if I can find one, since I have the day off from work. :scratchhead:

Enjoy your new plants. Sounds like they've found a really good home! :)

I am also thinking about setting up another terrarium... I will have to have a look around this weekend and see what I can find. Though I can't really do one extra large - with minis, you can fit in a lot of variety into quite a compact space!!

I'm loving my new plants... and there are more on the way! Yippee!!

Nice selection! My son has Den. spectabile, it has cool looking flowers.:)

shakkai 07-31-2007 04:14 PM

Terri, I think Den. spectabile is one that you either love or hate. I have seen the flowers described as grotesque by more than one source! I just love it!! (Though I will have to wait quite few years to see flowers....)

That Dendro senile is just too cool to pass up. I take it, that is in one of your terrariums? Gotta go huntin for this guy!

shakkai 07-31-2007 05:23 PM

Spot on, Ross. Though this is one of the ones that I want to set up a new aquarium for.... it needs warmer temps in the summer than its temp new home can provide.

Isn't this one the coolest little thing? I found it while we were researching project plants. Here are what the flowers look like: IOSPE PHOTOS

I checked that out and my conclusion: I HAVE to have this guy! I noticed it's decidous. Did you know that?

shakkai 07-31-2007 06:06 PM

Yes, though it says that some leaves may remain through the dormant period.

The main thing is that the white hairs remain for at least a couple of years on old canes.... gives it a really cool 'old man's beard' sort of look!

I hope you get one soon!!

I've been searching this afternoon. If there's one to be found, it's mine

Just found one on line at Andy's Orchids. It's mine and will be here Friday! Thanks for the heads-up.

Mua-ha-ha-ha!! Another conquest!

Do you have any other Dendros? This is my first one....

I'm so happy you found one, now we can compare notes. Some sources say that this is a tricky one.

Though any Dendro would be a learning experience for me might as well be a really cute one!

I have one of these, got it from a friend when I was adopting the 'chids he could no longer care for...haven't had it bloom yet and for a while it did nothing. I moved it around for a while and have found that it likes high light, not quite Cattleya light...maybe just a notch under that level. Seems to be doing better :)

shakkai 08-01-2007 08:27 AM

That's really good to know! Thanks for that Sue! (She says, getting up to move this one into some brighter light.... Hmmm... but will the humidity be high enough over there??)

cb977 08-01-2007 09:52 AM

Being in Florida, I don't really pay too much attention to humidity levels...it's always high!

shakkai 08-01-2007 10:07 AM

:D

Is your's completely deciduous? How do you manage the cool winter rest period?

cb977 08-01-2007 10:10 AM

The leaves didn't all fall off.
For my Dens that require a winter rest, I move them all to an area where they stop getting watered and fed starting around Nov 1, then until late Feb/early March they just get a slight barely-there mist once every 2 or 3 weeks.
In March, I put them back in their original areas and start feeding and watering again.

Very nice plants, I really like the Den with the hair, it has a graceful growing habit too.

Susanne, should I have it at same light level as Sophronitis cernua or lower?

shakkai 08-03-2007 04:38 PM

Being up here nearly on latitude 51... I'm giving mine full light - as that probably translates to less than Cattleya light in Florida. ;)

What I read was to keep increasing the light until it showed signs of stress, then back off just a notch, and it would be happy.
