Can anyone identify this orchid? Taken at 2100m, Western Cordillera. Apologize for poor image of the flower.

It's a Maxillaria species of some sort.

I may have seen this species before, but I don't recall.

Pitter 09-26-2010 08:39 AM

Ok thank you.

Tindomul 09-26-2010 05:25 PM

Wow, que chevere!

One black flower and one white flower coming off the same bulb?

Pitter 09-27-2010 07:43 AM

I´m not sure. The stem bases are burried in a bll of moss.

RobS 09-27-2010 01:41 PM

I'd say the black / brown flower is wilted.

SOS 09-27-2010 04:33 PM

I would too, but it doesnt look wilted and there is another one in what looks to be a tight bud stage on the right hand of the photo.

King_of_orchid_growing:) 09-27-2010 09:36 PM

You might want to check if it might also belong to the genus Nidema.

The white flower may be Maxillaria acuminata. The dark flower is either a separate species (Max. nigrescens?)or a flower to which something has happened.

Here is a photo taken a couple of days later with more flowers in bloom.

ronaldhanko 09-28-2010 09:45 AM

Tehre are almost certainly two different species growing together here.

RobS 09-28-2010 02:27 PM

Na don't think so and I'd also stick with Maxilaria as there are multiple flowers are comming from the base of the bulb.

ronaldhanko 09-28-2010 03:19 PM

There is no Maxillaria that I know of that has both white and dark flowers.

RobS 09-28-2010 03:41 PM

The dark flowers are the light flowers that are wilted.

Here are close ups of the two "black" flowers. They both were in this same condition at the time when all the "white" flowers were still unopened buds. Could they just be flowers that never developed?

Tim 09-29-2010 11:29 AM

Looks like the dark ones just blasted O.o What ever it is, it's a very intriguing species

ronaldhanko 09-29-2010 12:17 PM

It does look from the pictures like these are flowers that never opened but blasted.

Pitter 09-29-2010 03:41 PM

What does "blasted" mean in orchid speak?

Means they've turned brown and died without ever opening.

Pitter 09-29-2010 05:11 PM

Thought so but wanted to be sure.
