A Spectacular Dendrobium

Den. Hawaiian Spectacular 'Mauna Kea' is one of the oldest plants in my collection. The plant is more than 20 years old. The plant won the Best Dedrobium at the Aiea Orchid Show beld June 12-14, 2009. This is one plant with two tall stalks bearing large white flowers. The stalks are 45 inches tall. The flowers have a natural spread of 4-1/2 inches.

The plant is grown with my other dendrobiums and cattleyas under 50% shade screen. It is in a wooden basket with diatomite rock as the media. The plant blooms in June. The tall stalks need to be reinforced with wooden stakes or they will bend down from the weight of the flowers. I keep the plant under a roof when the flowers open to protect them from the rain. The flowers will last for about a month. The plant is an old mericlone. I have not seen others around.
