Very beautiful! Do you have it mounted on that tree?

Royal 06-04-2009 11:30 AM

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm pretty excited about these blooms, this plant was my "holy grail" for a while. Now I'm using it in my breeding program.

Liliy, No, It's mounted on a piece of wood. We get actual winters here so I can't naturalize them on trees like our tropic-dwelling friends.

Hi Royal! What a beauty your bicornutum is! I have a seedling of one, but I can't remember who I got it from, you perhaps? I dunno...lol. Anyways....now I know what I have to look forward to...many many years down the road...lol. How large in size do these get?

nenella 06-04-2009 03:46 PM

WOW! That is an extremely ' "perfect" flower ' Symetrically speaking & as I've said before...I Luv whites! Thank you for making me discover another orchid, which to be perfectly honest, I'd never before heard of! :blushing:
Thank you!!

Swamper 06-04-2009 05:53 PM

Hey Royal...nice growing as usual. I agree with Nenella and how symetrically perfect it looks, and it does appearr to be "in the trees" too badd they gotta come in.

Royal 06-04-2009 06:48 PM

Yeah, if you connected the tips of all the flower parts it's darn near a perfect circle. I love the double keeled callus in the lip and the two "horns" on the lip (hence the name).

Becca, They get pretty big. They are ant hosts like the Myrmecophylia (or however it's spelled). The old leafless p-bulbs on this one are as tall as 10-14 inches. The baby I sent you is from Troy Meyers, this one is from Andy's. Maybe they'll be a bit different?

Nenella, You may have heard of it, or it's hybrids. It's one of those with an identity crisis. Used to Be Diacrum bicronutum, and was used to make many pastel Dialaelia hybrids and eventually - Iwangara Apple Blossom. :)

Love this - I have the primary with laelia albida (dialaelia snowflake) and it's a favorite, but I've been looking for this species for a while. Beautiful blooms!

quiltergal 06-04-2009 08:50 PM

It is beautiful Royal! The lip is extraordinarily cool!

Becca 06-05-2009 02:57 PM

Royal I thought it was you I got the seedling from :) I'm surprised I haven't killed it yet, it seems to be doing pretty well so far! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

dgenovese1 06-08-2009 10:44 AM

Hi Royal,
As others have pointed out, it is a beauty...I can see why you refer to it as your "Holy Grail". :)

Thanks for expanding my knowledge of yet another species I've not heard about before...now, how many does that make? :scratchhead:

Trini Kjeldz 09-30-2013 10:34 PM

I'm almost 4 yrs late and Nenella took the exact words from my mouth...I am from Trinidad and Tobago in the xaribbean where C.bicornutum is native along our coasts and even central parts of the islands..escaped from gardens no doubt...and as far as shapes go that is an AM/AOS right there...wow u really have a gem it caught my eye..could see why you use it for breeding..jus for fun our island has one plant found with pink suffusion and blush in the petals ,sepals and lip..if u google search you will see it on images...after about 12 years of selective breeding some offspring now begin to show the pink but the shape isn't as good...
