Most desirered destination for orchids
:waving I was asked by a friend today if I had a choice to go anywhere in the world to see orchids (wild or not). where would it be? Well I had to think for a long time and finally decided that I would like to visit Thailand. From what I have seen with the greenhouse there and all they look spectacular. ;)
How about you? |
Cool thread, Dave.
Japan and Korea for me, no doubt about it. Too bad I wouldn't be able to take anything back with me though.:_( |
Since I love vandas most I would probably choose Thailand as my first choice but I'd cheat and choose a few more places.

You can bring orchids back if you do the paperwork ahead of time. I just went to Vietnam, and saw some orchids, but I wasn't really in the best area of the country for orchids, so I'd like to go back and specifically look for orchids. |
Japan and Brazil for sure!
I would love to travel brazil looking for orchids in the wild. |
Def cool thread!
I've always really wanted to go to Indonesia, travel around Java and Bali. Looking for wild orchids there would be a fantastic bonus! |
Ummm...:dunno: I would not be able to pick just one spot...but if I did it would be Costa-Thai.
Costa Rica has some beautiful forest preserves that I've read about...and Thailand has the vandaceous gems that are my favorites...so, Costa-Thai...or Thai-Rica would be my choice. |
No no. I would not go any where with you guys,:nana:
Me, I would LOVE LOVE to go to the Cloud Forests of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, maybe with a side trip to Venezuelan and Panamanian and Costa Rican Cloud Forests. My Second choice. Hengduan Mountains in the southeast of China where Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan meet. This is the most biodiverse place for temperate flowering plants, ANYWHERE!!!!! All them exotic plants people grow in their gardens in temperate zones come from here, and all the natives we have, have cousins growing over there.!!! The only reason its my second choice is cause its so far away. |
Hmmm. That is a difficult choice. I love cattleyas, so probably I would choose Brazil.
|
if i ever could swing it; i would like to take a canoe trip up the amazone and the rio negro, just like the old orchid hunters used to do.
it,s been a dream of me for a long long time. |
Well, Japan would have been my first choice, but I've already been and will likely go again later this year.
So, my most desired destination at the moment is Costa Rica. Really, really want to go there. Doesn't look like I'll make it this year with all of the other trips and commitments, but I have already started planning, so will have to find time soon! |

I already asked my local grower about bringing back orchids myself from Korea. I guess it's alot more complicated than paperwork, also MN has no port of entry for orchids. He said I could have the plants shipped to them and I could pick it up there but that's pretty much the only way. |
:D Sandy, Camille, you're very kind!
As for me, China would be my destination! |
Anywhere from Himachal Pradesh to the Hengduan Mountains. Second choice would be The El Cielo Reserve in Mexico.

Thailand would be my first choice, Japan 2nd choice, the Vanda growers in Florida would be my 3rd choice. The first two fall into the pipe dream catigory, possibly even the 3rd choice.
About 35 years ago I traveled most of the South American countries. At that time I appreciated all the flowers but, if I could do it again, I would be more selective of where I go. I remember many orchids being pointed out to me in Brazil, and Peru but at that time the wonder and beauty of all the orchids didn't hit me like it would today. Marilyn |
