Phal equestris 'Orange' (somehow a bit disappointing)
Ok, I admit it is a seedling and that it will improve with time (I hope!), but after several weeks watching the spike grow up to 18", I think it is quite disappointing to have ONLY 2 blooms on it :(
and yes, I know, those 2 flowers are really nice.. good size, and great shape (a bit too different from normal equestris for my taste, I must admit)... Judge yourself ;) Phalaenopsis equestris ‘Orange’ on Flickr - Photo Sharing! |
LOL I can understand your frustration Ramon, but It's Beautiful!!!!
|
I personally love it! The colors are great on it. It's a shame that you only got 2 blooms but give it time. I have a phal keiki with 50% equestris, and it only gave 5 blooms for it's first spike.

It's a seedling, and it is beautiful....stop your whining and give it some love....lol. (Just messing with you).
Very very beautiful! Great job Ramon! |
I know... I also love this one.. but hey, I have been watching that *&%*"&ç*£$ç*§ spike growing and growing and growing for several weeks...  and now...
at least they make a nice picture  |
Awww, they're very cute though ;)
But I understand your frustration on them... |
The flowers are very pretty, nice orange tint.
My old equestris makes flowers and keikei's like mad and I bet next years flower count will be far from disappointing. |
he-he, that's the case with my "standard" equestris, one or two keikis per spike, and normally two spikes at the same time... I wish I could let it grow with the keikis, the same way as the one awarded last October in the Locarno Show (scroll down in this page to see the picture of it Bewertungssitzung vom 10.10.08 ), but unfortunatelly, I do not have the space for it...
translation (13 Infl., 124 Blüten, 57 Knospen. Blütengrösse 3,0/3,0 cm): 13 spikes, 124 flowers, 57 buds. flower size 1.2x1.2 inches ;) |
It's very pretty, Ramon...I'm sure you'll get more blooms next time around ;)
:cheer: |
Remember equestris has a branching spike habit, and you have lots of nodes so it may just be warming up. It's very pretty. I've had my eye on this clone at Big Leaf.

The flower is very unique and beautiful. It is possible that it may grow more buds from the tip and continue blooming. I have Phal. Mahinhin 'Marianne' that puts out one or two long lasting flowers at a time but blooms throughout the year. Here is a picture. Oh, and the alba that I saw in your gallery is exceptionally nice.

I think it's a stunning flower! The rest will come with time.

Dear Ramon,
The plant has some genetic problems (irregular petal margins, etc.). Given the degree of spotting on the lateral sepals I would suspect some hybridization in the backgroud - maybe Cassandra (equestris x stuartiana) back-crossed to equestris. I agree, it doesn't do much for me. Hope that helps, Eric |
Hi Eric, I am also convinced this is not a pure equestris. As I said in my first entry, the shape is better than standard equestris, and in general too different for my taste. Additionaly, as you said, the margins of the petalss is a bit denticulated, which is typical pf hybrids of two plants not 100% genetically compatible...
However, this mericlone is sold as Paph. equestris 'Orange' both in the USA and Europe. I do not know where it originally comes from... I will give it a chance, for a second or third blooming, and see if it improves... if not, will get kicked out of my collection... :) |
That is a very pretty flower even if there are only two! Just admire and take pictures and I am sure it will have more buds next time. ;)
