Dtps. Kenneth Schubert 'Purple Martin' Blooming

I bought this as a tiny seedling last year from Big Leaf Orchids. I was surprised that it bloomed so soon. Could be it's just naturally a small plant. It's kind of a violet blue that is hard to capture with the camera. This is pretty close though. This is it's first blooming and the petals and sepals all recurve. Seems to be worse when the flower first opens. Anybody know if this may be a cultural issue on my part? I'm all ears!

Being it's parents are Dor. pulcherrima x Phal. violacea, your seedling can very well be bloom size.
Dor. pulcherrima is small sized to begin with ..

It's a blue blooming beauty!
I'd be very happy with that little cutie

Thanks for the info D! Too bad it didn't inherit violacea's fragrance. You can't have everything I guess. :)

It's soooo pretty! I have this one too and I bought it from Big Leaf. :) Now I really can't wait to see mine bloom.

As far as the recurve goes .. I had seen it with my Phal equestris 'Gino' (peloric) blooms .. it might be during bud development that this occurs .. I can't remember if it straightened itself out or not :duh: .. give it a few days and see what happens .. I remember blooms occurring curved such as yours and ones that developed 'normally' on the same spike.

Yet another beauty, Terri! That color is just amazing!

gmdiaz 08-08-2008 07:55 PM

Ohhhh wow, Terri!

Awesome job blooming the little beauty!

Mine shows no sign of blooming but if the blooms end up looking anything like yours, it'll be worth the wait!

Nice going!

Terri,

My Dor pulcherrima will do this when it's first opening sometimes. I do believe it either the heat or the strong lighting, not sure which one yet - perhaps a combo. These can also bloom with very small leaves, it's nice!

Beautiful lil blooms ~ Good growing :D

Oh Terri, now you've gone and done it. I just made a vow to not get any more orchids for awhile and you post something like this!!!

Well, I do have Dor. pulcherrima with 4 spikes right now, hopefully I can be satisified with that...........sure, that's going to happen!

I LOVE IT!!!

quiltergal 08-09-2008 11:28 AM

Here Al, let me make it easier for you..... It's a tiny little thing so really doesn't take up much space.

Dtps Purple Martin 'KS' - Big Leaf Orchids

Gloria, thanks for the tips. We do have hot summers here but the house normally doesn't get above 80 during the day. The AC kicks on at about 78. The plant started out a bit father away from the T5s than it is now. I was thinking maybe it wasn't getting enough light. Dunno! :dunno:

Oh Terri that is beautiful!! I love the blueish purple color.

This ones going on my "Gotta Have" list

Thanks Terri,
It's on my 'wish list' at Big Leaf, now if the D*** lottery would cooperate!

If anyone is undecided about buying this little one I might have the deciding factor for you. I just stuck my nose in it and guess what? It's fragrant too! It's very light and kind of has a grapey smell to it. (Al sometimes Peter sends a freebie seedling to sweeten the deal.) :)
