anyone want a C. crispa seed pod?
Hello,
Does anyone want a C. crispa seed pod? I don't know what to do with it. The people who asked for it aren't responding. I emailed Troy Meyers but never got a response either. One's already ruptured so I'm just going to trim the other one and toss it. I don't know if these are viable seeds either. I thought about sneaking into my lab and plating it myself but I don't want to be fired ;) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fb4568cf_c.jpg Mother plant x self https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9006b697_c.jpg |
Dorchid might want it? He's doing some flasking out here in CO.
|
Thanks, David!
Jeff- if you still have it I’ll take it and get it plated for you. I’ll pm you my address. |
You're welcome! Love this - hope the seeds end up doing something.

Got the capsule and the seed looks great! The capsule was slightly dehisced in a couple places so disinfected the seed in 5% bleach for 5 min and then gave 5 rinses. A tremendous amount of seed! I did plate one with seed straight from the capsule just to see how it does. 9 mother plates each sown with roughly 1 ml of seed solution. Trying not to sow so thickly. They still have a ton of seed each. Many thanks, Jeff; if all goes well I’ll get you some flasks in a year or so!

Thanks so much for taking and plating the seeds! I'm glad there were lots of seeds and that it didn't go to waste :) Looking forward to them germinating!!
|
You are welcome! I couldn’t get a good pic but looked at the plated seed under the loop and they’re all packed with fat embryos. Should have a high rate of germination.
Additionally, I only used about 1/20th of the seed so will save the rest to play with different media recipes. As there are 9 mothers, I’m also happy to send germ plates out to anyone looking to work on replating. Of course this is based on germination rate and how they’re looking. |
Exciting!

The dry/unsanitized seed molded immediately.

I guess the seed pod was already compromised? Great that you sterilized with bleach!
Btw, im really enjoying the photos and updates. Thank you :) |
It was but I’m guessing the mold spores came from the exterior of the capsule…I only flamed it and briefly at that. All the other plates are looking good. I’lll keep this thread alive with updates as things progress!

oh that's cool - so many of them!

These are just over 3 months and have kind of stalled out. About time for replate anyway, so moved up to 3 different maturation formulations. The closeups are from June 19 and little has changed since.

I cann’t wait til I learn to do that procedure.

Is it normal for the growth to stall unless you replate it to another type of medium? |
You bet! Ultimately, yes, that is the case, however, in my experience, this is super early but it’s not unheard of. Be interesting to see how they react to the different replate formulations.

Seeing some development on the replated protocorms with leaves starting to take shape! These are super slow and not sure why. The protocorms on the germination plates are sitting there as if in stasis.

Im learning, just by reading your thread. Its a lesson in itself, so please continue!
Im sure theres not just anywhere you can go to experience such. Thanks |
I'm glad it's educational! I just love looking at this kind of stuff so fun to produce it when you can't find it.

I'm glad it's still growing, albeit that it's slow. I tried pollinating my crispa again (and with purpurata) this year, but it didn't take :(
|
Did you ever give out those pods?
|
Since the original requestors never replied back, I sent the seed pods to Dorchid. The seeds in this topic thread are from those pods. Glad to have found a home.
|
Amazing.
I have a bunch of seedlings that also stalled. I am not sure why. |

Dorchid, dont you think handleing these new seedlings help a great deal in giving the feel for keeping and succedeing with a greater variety of orchids.
|
Absolutely!
|
That is the major reason I am intently interested in getting started (involved) in this. When I was keeping aquaria it was very rewarding to breed the fishes I kept.
|
Yeah, I had the same thought to myself the other day as I tended some cacti I'm growing from seed. My track record with keeping cacti alive is pretty poor but growing them from seed is definitely teaching me some things!
|
All the outlets that sell plants are sure getting carried away with pumping dies into the cacti they sell to make them more noticeable.

Thank you so much for the updates. This brings back memories how the forums used to be 10 to 15 years ago. really dynamic places with lots of cool stories.
As for your success, congrats! Would you be kind enough to share your recipe on the media. Do you use close make-up glove box or laminar flow hood? I tried in the past with straight up P668 + sugar and got very limited sucess and stall. Could it have been the seed decontamination with H2O2 that took too long and killed most embyos? Or excessive soap? Thats kinda of my biggest doubt since none of the 9 jars looked moldy or wierd. Simply perfect black. |
You bet! It's been a fun journey and I'm glad it's been educational.
I'm using P723 for germination. P668 is a maintenance/replate medium which has about twice the NPK as P723 and could have been too "hot" for the seeds. Adjusting the pH can also help...I shoot for around 5.6-5.8. For seed disinfection, I use 5% bleach solution for 5 min and then 3-4 rinses with sterilized distilled water. For replate, i use P748 + pineapple juice at like 50ml/L of media. |
