Here is cattleya iricolor, a division from Chadwick.

I love this species, very beautiful.

Very cool! I understand the fragrance on this one is powerful.

It's an interesting--even unique--look for a cattleya species. Kind of reminds me of a dendrobium in some ways. I also would like to know about its fragrance.

I have 3. They stink; like when you accidently take a whiff of bologna right after opening the package. Or maybe pickle loaf.

I love the shape of the flowers however, very elegant, always symmetrical.

What?! A bologna-scented cattleya--one my dog would like, in other words. Good to know.

:rofl::rofl:

I always heard the fragrance is very pleasant! Maybe this one shouldn't be on my "list" after all! lol

I found the fragrance to be very pleasant, like a sweetened olive oil. As for power, it bloomed at the same time as a nobility I had. At first light the fragrance of the nobilor started, and soon filled the room. A couple hours later all I could smell was the iricolor unless I got my nose right up on the nobilior..

The fragrance is pleasant and can be detected from a few feet away, but it does not fill up a room.

If you are an AOS member, the following is an interesting read about this species:

Interesting... I've met several people who tell me gardenias and Clerodendrum philippinense (or whatever it's now called) smell like hot dogs. Have you sniffed these two plants? What do you think?

Gardenias smell like sweet buttery popcorn to me. One of my favorites. Never smelled clerodendrum, although I may need to check it out.

I did a 5 min Google browse and I saw iricolor alternatively described as "artisan cheese dipped in vanillia", "sweet burning plastic", "one of those that some people love and some people hate".

I do agree with everyone who comments on the fragrance, its the most powerful of all cattleya species.

Fragrance is funny. Its not surprising tastes vary (good/bad), but it is weird that different folks experience the same smell in different ways. Wish I could get a definitive description from my dog, but alas, he still refuses to talk.

Our fragrance receptors develop hypervariable business ends early in life, as do antibodies. Not everybody can perceive all scents and they don't always perceive them similarly.
