SVO 9266
https://photos.smugmug.com/SVO-mini-...%209266-X3.jpg SVO 9319 https://photos.smugmug.com/SVO-mini-...%209319-X2.jpg :) "Virginia Dickey" is going to get her own thread now too.. |
May I ask about the bench set up? It looks like you have slats that hold the pot lip and the pot hangs down in the gap. Is that accurate? What size are the pots, 4”? Do you also have an area with large slots for bigger pots?
|
:bowing pretty much you got the construction. its minimal.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Orchid-sh...%5B1%5D-X2.jpg home depot homemade handy shelves...4 inch clay from the garden dept and select pine from the lumber section. lots of air around the pots. the smaller plastic pots stay cooler inside the clay. gives the plants room to grow and keeps you from overcrowding them. larger than 4 inch are just too big bec the plants get too tall for me but in theory you could make about up to 6 or 8 inch slats for pots but they get heavy too so lumber has to get heavy.. goldilock zone :) https://photos.smugmug.com/Orchid-sh...%5B1%5D-X2.jpg working on puttng more in. https://photos.smugmug.com/Orchid-sh...%5B1%5D-X2.jpg  |
Pretty slick set-up there squirrel! :wtg:
|
What is the percentage on that shadecloth?
|
its 70% Aluminet right now.
Everything been inside until a few weeks ago. if they do fine I think Ill put up the 60% cloth. They really need more light as the growing season moves into summer. :waving added. .. another thing about the Squirrel "potted rail system" is the plants don't tend to fall over . The straight lines and uniform pot sizes go a long way to curing my O.C.D. for order and form. |
I bet you could go to 50% Squirrel.
I have 60% way down here in Key West because that's what Bob Fuch's suggested I go with and he was right. I had sent him an email several years ago asking what % was on his houses as I was putting mine together. He responded he used 50% in Homestead but he had been thinking about my question and decided to suggest I go with 60% not because I'm 125 miles further south from him but because we are surrounded by water and the sun reflecting off of that water makes it much, much brighter here in the Keys than up on the mainland. Given that you are far enough inland and actually further north than Homestead, FL, I would deduce you should do well using 50% too. Any orchid growers near you that you could get a recommendation from? |
I have 50% outside, but due to my north/south yard I haven't put anything out this year except one hanger due to the winds. I recently bought a more powerful light and I have lowered things as far as I can in the tent. Was thinking of adding some 30-50% to help.
|
Choosing a shadecloth percentage needs to take into account light duration as well as intensity - so all 3 above answers are likely correct... for different people. I use 60% everywhere except over the Cyms/L anceps but in summer my yard gets blasted from half an hour after sunrise to half an hour before sunset since it has an east-west orientation, with no trees. (The trees are all on the north side of the property where they don't do much since sun never comes from that direction) Also, I get little or no cloud cover during the summer - rain is extremely rare at that time, so that's another factor. Where it rains in summer, there are some hours where clouds reduce sun intensity.
|
I have exact same orientation Roberta but I have much more cloud cover here in summer than winter as summer is our rainy season. The light is actually much brighter in the winter when we have very little rain.
|
the 70 was bought for the full west wall on the porch last year. otherwise it was uninhabitable.
I think now moving forward.... 1 panel of 70 over the paphs and phals 1 panel of 60 over the dendrobiums n catasetums 1 panel of 50 over catts ,epidendrums and vandas. :) |
SVO 9319. Has 5 more buddies on the way. These are very nicely colored and large lips for the flowers.

Maybe the flowers will grow some more in the next few days. They are already fighting for more light. SVO 9319 "Virginia Dickey" joins "Spring Blaze" and lives up to a plants name to be sure. :bowing |
|
I didnt notice it at 1st but that last flower is deformed. The lip is curled around the column and got stuck there. Tried to fix it but it grew that way..
The other flower on the hand is looks pretty good. Have 2 more on the way..:) https://photos.smugmug.com/SVO-mini-...t%20one-X3.jpg |
It's the vibrancy that catches my eye more than anything else.
|
Indeed!
bec this hybrid has both parents with 60% coccinea the red really comes thru :) The Sophies are coming out. but it is Catt. Bright Angel "Red Knight " x Catt. Mem. Trudi Marsh |
