Paph rothschildianum spike watch...

I'm happy to see my first spike on a multifloral type. Since I've never seen one in person... I'm not sure what all the hype is with rothschildianum but I'm excited to find out soon... :)

So far... it looks like a terrifying tulip.

Now when to stake it... and I wonder how tall the spike can get. I don't have much headspace in my indoor growing area under the lights...

One bract...

Oh wow! That is going to be spectacular. Congratulations. Don't be in a rush to stake. Likely the spike will present well all by itself - and will build the strength to support the flowers if left to its own devices. Any "guiding" should be only if really needed.

Jeff214 02-19-2022 11:44 PM

Thanks - I'm excited for the blooms! I'm rather clumsy and I worry that I'm going to knock things down when I'm watering. We'll see!

billc 02-20-2022 06:24 AM

You.are.in for a real treat. The hype will be justified when it blooms.

Bill

Shadeflower 02-20-2022 07:55 AM

already makes me want one too.

WaterWitchin 02-20-2022 10:00 AM

Imma grab some popcorn and join this watch party!

Jeff214 02-20-2022 03:54 PM

Thanks. I'm excited to see this thing in all its glory...!

This rothschildianum seems to be a moderate grower, making 2 leaves a year. I got this one 2 years ago. It's been pretty care free. Philippinese is an even faster grower, making alot of new growths but hasnt bloomed. And then theres sanderianum... I think its made half a leaf in two years............... I think the spike watch party for that one will be in 20 years...

WaterWitchin 02-20-2022 04:45 PM

Right?!? Why are they so darned slow?!? Patience is one thing… some of these are just ridiculous.

Roberta 02-20-2022 05:19 PM

That's what multifloral Paphs do If you get a seedling, you'd better be young.

Mr.Fakename 02-21-2022 04:46 AM

That's going to be an incredible show!!

I recall you telling me this and I decided to get a seedling when I turned 31. I think that's sort of... "young" still? Haha... I feel old now that I've left my twenties.

WaterWitchin 02-22-2022 07:46 AM

Indeed. A perfect example of why I won't be adding any new to my collection.

Definitely still young. And young for quite a long time yet.

Jeff, you're always going to be young!

PlumCrazy 02-22-2022 10:11 PM

These threads kill me! I've had a plant in spike for three months and the wait is agonizing! Now I have to watch this too.

Is it open yet?

Is it open yet?

IS IT OPEN YET?

I really need a different hobby.

yug 02-22-2022 11:59 PM

Congrats!

You could always get more plants so that you'll always have something in bloom! ;)

hopefully young enough for the sanderianum... And you weren't kidding about how slow growing this is. It makes me wonder how it's advantageous for these to grow so slowly in the jungle...

The combination of the shapes, the colours - including the formula 1 nose cone.

"Formula 1 nose cone" sounds sexier than "bobsled" which came to mind first. haha

I was wondering what plants to get this year, I guess now is the time to invest in multiflorals! Thanks for helping narrowing the choice down

Life is short. Buy what you want! At least, that is my mantra. ROBB

This is one of the most pleasurable posts I have monitored in a long time....but I think this wait may very well give me an aneurism

Jeff214 03-10-2022 09:11 PM

oops

Louis_W 03-10-2022 09:52 PM

Wow that is fascinating and beautiful from the very beginning! That spike 'fan' is really unexpected and amazing. I don't have Paphs but after this post I can definitely see the allure! Multiflorals are really stunning...

Thanks for looping us all in!

Jeff214 03-13-2022 10:36 PM

It's still opening up but I didn't realize how large the blooms are. Mines at 9.5 in (24 cm) at the moment. I was reading that it could get up to 40 cm?? wow. That certainly would be astonishing!

billc 03-14-2022 07:36 AM

Astonishing would be the correct word for.a Roth bud opening. Enjoy it!

Bill

Jeff214 03-22-2022 09:54 PM

well I probably should have staked it since it came out a little wonky... next time!

Roberta 03-22-2022 09:57 PM

It could still straighten itself out. Or you can gently move the long part of the spike to more vertical. But gently... we don't even want to think about what could happen with a false move...

It's actually incredibly rigid. I fear the worst if I move it too much. Next time, I'd have to guide it on a stake from the beginning.

Roberta 03-22-2022 10:22 PM

Definitely... let it do its thing this time. Can hardly wait to see it!

Jeff214 03-22-2022 11:07 PM

I've been updating the original post - the fourth bud just opened up. Fifth one is coming up... and the sixth one may be a dud.

Roberta 03-22-2022 11:18 PM

Ahhh... missed that, sorry! I think the presentation is actually nice... problem with staking too early is that the buds start out leaning over and then straighten out, so in staking important not to distort the positioning by doing too much, I think it's pretty outstanding!

billc 03-23-2022 05:52 AM

I didn't realize you added pics to the original post. Your Roth is stunning. The most flowers I've ever gotten is 4, I'm jealous!
Please post when they are all open
.

Bill

Wow!!!! Really cool.

And I showed my husband, who thought it was awesome. I believe that means I'm allowed to buy one, right?

I think you have to now  It's quite a bizarre yet stately thing!
