C. walkeriana flower bud!

Two new growths appeared on my C. walkeriana. I think the one on the leading pseudobulb is (most likely) an inflorescence, as it is more rounder and terminates with reddish sheath-like growth; and the one coming out of the back bulb is just a new pseudobulb, as you can see there is a green leaf tip emerging from the growth (it is also quite flat). It is interesting to see the difference between these two growths.

BTW, mine is growing on a pseudo-semihydro-mount-ish thingy I have built from a rolled up plastic gutter guard lined with fiber clothes (actually, chopped up dish washing scrub pad) and chunks of pumice, which is sitting inside a reservoir filled with gravel and water. So far, it worked quite nicely and all of my walkerianas are now being grown like this.

I'm not too sure. Wait till someone who grows walkeriana can comment - to me both growths look too similar to be different from each other.
Leaves can be green or purple, and they both look like leaves to me ..

bud I found online for comparrison: Flickr

I'm curious to see how that other one progresses. I generally see either inflorescences or new growths happening at any given time, not both simultaneously. Certainly could happen, just not super common! Spikes on walkeriana & nobilior are usually more pointed than new growths. Here's a progress shot on a nobilior spike: https://live.staticflickr.com/870/26...c1e1b9ef_h.jpgCattleya nobilior var amaliae by Stephen Van Kampen-Lewis, on Flickr

It is indeed an inflorescence. :)

Two buds are emerging from the growth.

And this is the lower growth, which is just a new bulb.

http://www.orchidboard.com/community...1&d=1630473493

And it is currently sending out new roots.

Ha! Very cool!

Very pretty! Mine has a very ugly growth and the leaves are wrinkled at the beginning, it is very small but it blooms a lot.

Really cool method of growing! I really want to try your method of growing walkeriana! I've seen some Brazilian growers use something similar but they fill the cylinder with granite chips. your wicking method might be an upgrade. also a huge space saver because I have one walkeriana that grew 4" horizontally this year

Could you share a picture of the actual setup from a bit more far away?

Actually, it was the third image I attached at my second post, but forgot to include into the post as a tag.

Walkeriana grows very well mounted

Bummer...

Unfortunately, the buds got blasted. Perhaps the humidity was too low, as the weather has changed into autumn. Well, better luck next time!

That was nice to see the bud pics. Equally as nice as flower pics!

Shoot, that’s too bad! Did you change the position of the plant relative to its light source?

papayj 11-18-2021 05:08 AM

Another attempt.

Yet another spike appeared on the plant. Let's hope this time it will make it....

SouthPark 11-18-2021 09:59 AM

Nice to see this other spike! Looking good.

My Green Pets 11-19-2021 12:13 AM

Good luck!

Well, there were two buds growing but one of them blasted during a cold snap a week ago; I was naturally terrified (not again!) but fortunately, one made it, and fully opened just at the Christmas Eve. :-)

Hopefully it would do better next year, as now it has begun to make branching-off growths from the backbulbs.

isurus79 12-24-2021 09:14 AM

Very nice!

Lovely flower you got finally!
That red tin intrigued me. Is it filled with slow releasing fertilizer? Do you pour water over it when you water plants?

Yes it is filled with slow-releasing fertilizer (I use Multi-Cote brand for that) which automatically releases nutrients whenever I shower my plants with water. Whenever I want to flush the reservoir, I simply take out that basket and water it.

itzi 01-22-2022 01:21 AM

Lovely bloom, I'm happy it worked out for you! Thats an interesting mounting setup too. One end of the mesh tube is sitting in the reservoir and the pumice wicks the water up, which maintains moisture/humidity around the roots?
