Repotting a Giant

Phal gigantea

Wanted to mount this gig ever since I brought it home from the US last Nov, however it decided to spike and eventually flower for me.

So now after all the flowers are gone, i went ahead to remove the flimsy plastic pot.
Now that's hell a lot of roots and they all seem rather good.






Used a water hose and blasted out almost all the old moss.

With that 'Skeleton' shell and so much roots, I decided its a better option to pot it instead.
Didn't dare to untangle the roots. :?

Potted it with bark and new moss.

You must be happy to get that one potted up Mervin. It is a good size and wow great roots!

Potted in moss with an open pot like that, how often do you need to water it your area?

DaveW - depending on wind and sun, watering is anywhere from 3-5 days.
Before the repotting, it's at least 7 days in the old fully enclosed pot with 100% moss.

It is almost a year now since this thread. How is your plant? Did it bloom? Has it grown larger?

How unfortunate. These Phal.gigantea are such long lived, long leaved, and spectacular plants.

Hi,
The plant took a big hit but is in recovery mode.
This was due to a very hot and dry spell we had here and unfortunately I was not in town.

The plant lost all but 1 1/4 of its leaves due to rot but fortunately the crown was spared.

It has so far grown back a new leaf however it only 30% of its former self.

Slowly but surely it should bounce back.
