Yes Wild orchid that is very helpful. I will try that if I have any more problems. It does make sense to leave the roots out of medium if they have experienced root problems. And I love spending time with my orchids so spraying is not a problem as long as they don't dry out while I am at work. I heard about the weekly weakly rule and will be applying that to all my orchids now. I had only been fertilizing once a month same as my other plants. My big mistake treating these like ordinary house plants. The more I learn about them the more I want to learn. If I had a crystal ball I am sure it would show me in the future surrounded by orchids. Oh no I think I may be in trouble. LOL

Yes, we're all troubled here.
Love the frog, by the way.

If I can offer one more word of advice, drying out is not a problem at all for Phals. It's better to error on the side of dryness, than letting them stay too wet.

And of course, there's a little trick to spraying as we don't want moisture on the crown or leaves, right? Mainly, just blot it off with the paper towel. I also use a number of small spray bottles that make less mess - one is from the cleaning liquid for eye glasses. Anything that helps, right?

By the sound of it, you're doing well. Your orchids look quite healthy.

Take care!

Here's a little illustration - one of my rescue orchids working hard on growing new roots & a leaf.

It gets its daily dose of weak seaweed spray while I'm sipping my first cup of coffee in the morning. Yeah, I know!

I do the exact same thing! it's just relaxing to me to spray the roots... Don't know why... Kinda like its relaxing to paint (art, not walls )

I looked around today for some small clear pots to put them in and could not find any. Then as I was sitting on my porch eating a cup of pudding it dawned on me that they were just the right size. So I ate three of them one for each phal. Cleaned and bleached them then tried to make holes in them. I had no drill and a knife did not work well. Thought some more and had the idea to use my wood burning pen. Set it up on the porch and turn on a fan to blow away any fumes and was able to make nice round holes and slits in no time flat. Cleaned them again and then went about unpotting my babies. I had bought them off the clearance rack at lowes about a year ago they had hardly grown any. Of course knowing what I have learned on here I am surprised the lived at all. the leaves had started wilting and getting wrinkled. When I pulled them out of the clay pot the middle of the media which was a standard orchid mix was very wet and the poor thing had a bunch of rotted roots. All of them did have about 3 to 4 roots each that were OK. I cut off the bad roots. Rinsed off what was left then let them soak for about an hour in RO water and a couple a drops of superthrive. Took them out and let them dry some Then potted them up in my modified pudding cups with a mixture of bark, perlite, lava rock and a very small amount of spag. moss. Cleaned a little larger clay pot dried it off and set the plant inside. They already look better. I am hoping that they do well. Being in clear pots I will be able to monitor the roots and hopefully water them correctly. I had no idea that they should be not be in a larger pot like you do most plants. Thank you everyone for all the great advise you have posted here. Maybe now I can stop being an orchid killer and become a dedicated orchid grower.
Great idea! Necessity certainly is the mother of invention. I think most of us use some type of container that started as one thing, and is now a pot! I have a couple wet cat food containers (plastic) that I'm gonna see how my phal seedlings like.

...I'm so sorry you HAD to eat that much pudding! Ah, what we do for our orchids! heheheh j/k with ya!

Can't wait to see them bloom next spring! (just give them a couple weeks of cooler temps (~60°F) in the fall/winter, & you're good) And, yes, I got confidence in u! You've learned so much already, u had great instincts about those pudding cups... Yes, I see beautiful blooms in your future Good Luck! *uh, I'm gonna go find some pudding now *

Thanks for the advise you have been very helpful. Hopefully I will get all this figured out before I kill any more. I do have one more question. With the fertilizing I have read to use a weak solution. The type I am going to use is the better grow orchid plus. It says for weekly watering to add 1 tsp. per gallon or 1 tlbs. per gallon every 14 to 20 days. Which makes it sound like the weekly amount is already a reduced amount. How much to do think I should use. the last thing I want to do is burn my orchids.

Oh thank you very much that makes complete sense now. It looks as though it is working very well. I will be trying that next time the need arises.

Yes Island Girl I am hoping my orchids will like it. Of course not so sure my hips are going to forgive the pudding. But a little extra cushion will help for the long hours I will spend sitting and watching for them to grow. I can't help just admiring these wonderful plants. Hey you know how they say a watched pot never boils. I wonder if a watched plant never grows. I hope not If that is the case then I am in a heap of trouble.

Hello again!
I'm glad that our discussion has been helpful.

Sorry, I can't really help with the fertilizer question. This is one of the controversial subjects you can come across. So don't despair!
The general rule of thumb is to delute the recommended by the manufacturer dose. As far as the frequency... Some say - once a week, others - every 2nd watering, some others - whenever they remember
Some experts say that orchids in the wild feed on weak but frequent feeding supplied by the surroundings. So I personally try to do every 2nd watering but this is not a rigid practice.
One more tip - wet the roots first before applying the fertilizer. You're right, they are easy to get burned.

For some more tips, here's one of the discussions I found by using Search.

Happy Growing!
