OK, are these pots OK for orchids ?-weldmesh-baskets-jpg

Made out of left-over weldmesh, lined with plastic gutter-guard. Can anyone see a problem using this kind of pot. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

They look like they should work fine as long as the metal doesn't get too hot.

I would think it would depend on what genera you planned to put into them and the climatic conditions under which you grow.

They would work just fine as long as the size of the plant is appropriate for the size of your pot.

My intended genera were of the Cattleya alliance to be grown in my orchid shadehouse. This is the baskets potted up.

What potting media did you use?
I think the idea would be a good one but the metal may not last. Some metals rust away in no time. Have had trouble with wire baskets lined with Coconut fiber. I planted stanhopeas in them. the bottoms rust out and the plant has to be repotted. Hope it works for you.

I used medium bark nuggets with styrofoam nuggets. This is galvanised weldmesh. Will not rust. My shadehouse is made with it.

Seems like a lot of work to go to when standard plastic pots are so cheap. Also, edventurous roots soon find neighbouring pots and drop in to say hello.

Having said that, I have been using scrap weld mesh to make 'totem poles' for climbing plants. I simply clip narrow strips together with 'C' clips which also holds the scrap shade cloth on, stuff the centre with whatever I have available and stand it in a pot and the roots anchor themselves into the filling.
