Not all Masdevallias are cool growing. I've grown some that have been growing during our hot summers (it can be in the mid to upper 90's F here, and can sometimes be as warm as 113 F).
Some of the failures with Masd can be attributed to warm climates in relation to the species of Masdevallia being grown.
However, there is another issue that goes by unchecked...
Root rot from over watering.
There is a limit as to how wet Masdevallias can be grown. They don't need to be grown sopping wet, that's a myth of Masdevallias.
Most people in the US can grow Masdevallias that come from anywhere around 100 m up to 2,200 m. If the Masdevallias come from places any higher than 2,200 m, the number of people who can grow them starts dropping significantly. Should the Masdevallia come from above 2,600 m, people shouldn't even bother trying.
