We remove the fat from behind the shoulder on the animal's side. We take the fat from this area so that the animal does not need to wear an elizabethan collar because they cannot reach the site with their mouth (however, sometimes they use their back feet to scratch at it and we then suggest putting a t-shirt on your pet.) We typically can remove the fat that is directly under the skin, on seldom circumstances, we may have to cut through muscle to retrieve the fat from under it if there is not enough under the skin. We prefer not to cut into the muscle as that can cause post-surgical pain. It is measured in ounces. We typically remove around 20 ounces of fat. It may sometimes be less, or more, it sort of all depends. For example, we did a procedure yesterday and removed only 16 ounces. I'm not sure what the qualifications are for exactly how much is extracted.
