Hard leaves on Cattleya Female
Default Hard leaves on Cattleya

Hello! I have a Blc. Eagle Island 'Sangia' that I bought about a year ago. When I purchased it, the leaves were normal in texture. Now, they have gotten really hard and curled. The color has also sort of bleached out of them, and they look yellowish. I grow under lights and am thinking maybe it's getting too much light. I have since moved it to a different spot. The roots look great and there is a new shoot coming. Could it be something else? Thanks for the help!

spider mite? something is sucking the moisture out from the back of the leaf...look very closely at the back of the leaf....take a cotton pad and rub the back of the leaf and see if there is a powdery substance...that will be the mites....

It is worth checking for mites but otherwise this looks like a Catt that has been too warm, too dry (water or humidity) and/or too bright - most likely a combination. Air circulation can figure in too - more air movement will keep leaves cooler if light is bright, but unless humidity is high it can add to moisture stress. Since you are already trying a new spot you really need to give it 6 months to a year to see if new growth looks better.

Might be good light and not enough water.

Thanks for your replies. I don't think it has spider mites, but it might have had a little bit of scale at one point, but nothing horrible. I keep a humidifier on inside my grow tent, and it keeps the humidity between 50-90 percent for most of the day. I did repot it into cypress bark mix when I got it, so maybe I should have watered it more after that. I tend to err on the side of underwatering. Thanks for the help!
