Good to know I am not the only one that worries about vegetables as sources of virus! My kitchen has gotten cleaner since I got hooked on orchids three years ago. I water all my plants in the kitchen, so now after I prepare food, I thoroughly disinfect every surface.

My sister-in-law is a smoker: when she comes to visit, I ask her to wash her hands thoroughly, which she happily does with a big smile on her face. She knows I'm crazy, but she puts up with my quirks without too much complaint.

I'm glad she respects your house protocol.
It's your house and your plants, so everyone who enters must follow! lol

They say Tobacco Mosaic Virus can come from smokers handling orchids, so I don't think it is unreasonable to ask her to wash her hands.

I've heard that before too, but the question is does TMV can infect orchis??
I think CymMV is a related virus to TMV, but not sure about all the details.

Another side of it is that cigarette is usually wrapped up in paper anyways.

I don't smoke, so this is not something for me to worry about, but vegetable is fresh and recently I did have some half rotten onions and potatoes. I washed my hands and did not touch orchids that day, but still wonder and sort of freaked out. lol
The fungal organisms and certain bacteria that are responsible for this kind of rot in vegetable attack pretty much any kind of plants I read.
and who knows what virus was in the sap of the veggies I was chopping up. and I cook almost everyday! gosh!!!! my head spins. lol

I have heard TMV does indeed affect orchids. Smokers should where gloves when handling their orchids.

Maybe you will have to quit eating

I'm breathing a sigh of relief. My orchids are safe. Since I spend all the grocery money on plants, I have already had to quit eating. I knew there was a method to my madness somewhere in there

I wonder about electronic cigarettes, vaporizers, ect. I would imagine it would be the same precautions since this is liquid nicotine.

Not so. The liquid nicotine goes through a distillation process. It's the handling of the leaves of the actual plant that you have to worry about. Smokers handle those leaves all the time. Vapers never touch the liquid nicotine.

I have seen my son's girlfriend refill her e-cig from a bottle and it has spilled or got liquid on her hands but hopefully the process will have killed any plant virus. Thanks.

Wow... I hope she's alright. Nicotine does absorb through the skin. You're supposed to avoid getting that stuff on your hands.
