First Phal and leaf blackening; worried
Default First Phal and leaf blackening; worried

Young Phal, bloomed first in September have been weekly watering and added a fertilizer treatment in February. New buds formed last month. Yesterday I noticed black on the tips of two of my leaves. No spots, just sorta like black tip with black veins coming from it. Will try to post pictures.
I wanted to replant, but didn't want to traumatize it while blooming. Do I need to cut the black off or what is causing it?

Welcome to Orchid Board.

A picture would be very helpful. Just make 5 posts and then you can post pics. Also info as to what it is potted in and where it sits in the house and window, and temps etc will be helpful.

I added a picture (hopfully) to the orginal post. It's in the orginal moss it came in--I have wood chips I want to repot it in when its done blooming. It sits on a window sill, with maybe about an hr of direct sunlight during dawn but during the day it's all indirect. I'm in Florida so temp ranges from 72 (if air is on) to 80s if we leave it off during the day

Are those 2 leaves getting the most sun? It could be sunburn. Phals are fairly low light plants so don't really need direct sunlight.

Otherwise it looks healthy but how are the roots? If its been in the original moss since last Sept. they might not be happy.

The roots are really good, all green and no sign of browning. I'll move it off the sill for a a few days and watch it to make sure it doesn't spread. I was going to repot it and that's when I noticed the first sign of new buds and read it's best to repot when not flowering...but I this plant has become my baby (haha)! So I want it to be healthy.

Yes, the roots look very good. You must not be over watering. For the most part it looks healthy except for that leaf tip. It could be rot but if it was getting the direct sun, it could be burn. watch it carefully and if it starts to spread at all, cut back into healthy green tissue. You can seal the cut end with some cinnamon. If it is sunburn it shouldn't spread unless a secondary infections sets in, but won't get better either. So cutting the leaf in that case too would be OK.

Just saw your question of hydrogen peroxide. It's a good idea, especially if it happens to be infection.

Thank you everyone! I'll watch it another day and see if it spreads before I cut. :-)

I'm thinking sun burn as well but I don't really know. But when I get these pots I take a sharp knife and cut slits in the pot making sure you don't harm the roots so that they can breath better. These are kind of packed fairly tight in that sphagnum moss.
