I've seen that before. Once I bought a phal from Trader Joe's, and a 2" sodden, round spot that looked just like yours appeared on one of the leaves. The rot reached the spike and started liquefying the spike. Scary...afterwards I stopped buying plants from TJ.

Well, it's going! Can't say I'm thrilled. For all of you with Phals.... YOU DO NOT WANT THIS DISEASE!!!!!!!! things are better but I still have plants that have disease. If it is located out on the edge of the leaves, it is easy to cut and disinfect but when the crown is affected, I figure the game is over for that plant. I still remove as much as I can flush with H2O2 and then SA-20 and then cinnamon. So far I have tossed 4 to 6 plants away and have a dozen or so that I've kept in the hopes they may throw a keiki and recover. It has become so depressing that, at times, I want to just get rid of all of them and take my chid addiction in a different direction....

WARNING: Always be pro-active and spray for disease.... it may just say you major headaches and depression and plants!!!!!

Doc, do you have a recipe you can share for your copper sulphate? Paramount suggested I treat my zygopetalum with spots with copper sulphate but they said to be careful what recipe I use as some are worse than the spots. I figured you would have a safe one.

Copper based fungicides should be readily found at HD or Lowes. There are instructions on the container on how to mix etc.
Phyton 27 is a type of copper based fungicide which is very good at treating Erwinia but generally needs to be used up after mixing within 24 hours.

Physan is just a general anticeptic.
You can spray a diseased plant with physan solution but it will not stop Erwinia. However, because it takes a copper fungicide a few days or more to begin working, Physan may be all you have initially to try to slow things down.

Finally, I would treat my tree as it may also be harboring the Erwinia imo. As I am not the expert with trees, it's just a guess though

Glad to hear you have some semblance of control for it now....may good luck run your way!

Fight the good fight Doc. That's all you can do.
If there is a good side to this it is that you now have room for some different plants!
