I'm very excited about the meeting! I am dragging my husband with me, who is less than thrilled, but he will survive! I have never had a green thumb but I so badly want to make my new orchid hobby work!

I 2nd Rosies vote for possible over - watering. I have a few phals that I've done it to....and the leaves resemble what you have shown. Good idea to bring them to a meeting, no doubt you will recieve some good advice there. Let us know what you find & good luck.

Your mention of 'Miracle Grow' orchid mix concerns me as I've heard bad things about it from others here on Orchid Board. I believe it's too 'heavy' in texture for most phals. I've not used it myself so I can't comment from personal experience though.

It does seem rather heavy. It is just slightly more coarse than normal potting soil. Does this smother the roots? And if so does that cause rot or just growth problems?

I think it will smother the roots. The stuff I use is completely chunks of bark with no crumbly media at all, although some people like a bit of light additional media in there.
The main problem it will cause if too heavy is unhealthy roots (and therefore dehydration). You could get rot, or root death.

As has been said on your other thread about Miracle grow, I've heard the stuff can be good for some types of orchids, but ones like phals need more air arround the roots.
I had some medium (not Miracle Grow but another one which was too heavy) which almost killed 3 of my Phals before I learnt what was wrong with it (and even that the medium was the cause). I've rescued then all, but it's taken a while of TLC

You can buy phal mixes at various orchid internet shops. I like repotme.org (or is it .com) and they have very fast shipping.

I have gotten good ideas, but don't know a specific type to get. I have browsed at repotme.com and I like the site, but can't decide on what to order. My husband ordered a cattleya for me last night. Do those and phals like the same type of medium?
