Despite his defensiveness, he was good by his word and would have compensated you. I commend him for that!
Many of us have taken in plants that weren't in the greatest shape. One of the greatest pleasures is tending to a sickly or damaged plant only to see it grow and bloom for you..
You have not lowered your standards .. you have heightened them.
It's only the odds that there will be a 'not so perfect' plant that one comes our way either by purchase or possibly by one's ignorance of care. ( guilty!
