If I'm setting a trap for a pest I want one that does the complete job for me, can't see the point in 'humane' traps. There's no way I'm going to be letting loose a mouse or rat and giving it another chance to breed or bother me.
My exception is my rabbit trap - my Spanish neighbour then deals with the rabbits which end up in his pot.

I drown the rats, freeze them and give them to friends who keep rattlesnakes.

In my experience, pack rats are different from Norway and Black rats. Their behavior differs somehow, making effective trapping strategies a bit different. Some of the recommendations for city rats just don't work on the country cousins. Sounds like Estacion Seca has it figured out.
I have heard the opinion that live trapping and relocating any animal is actually crueler than sudden death in a snap trap.
My recommended best rodent deterrent is a Jack Russell terrier.
FYI, there is a "Rodent Deterrent" tape for wrapping wires. It seems to help, I ask for it on all my auto wiring that's been replaced. No repeat damage on the wrapped wire, so maybe it helps.
PS, thanks for the Curly Tail mention. I didn't know what they were, had to look them up. Florida is amazing.

True. Years ago, we had a mouse issue until we sealed up the holes with steel wool. We trapped out quite a few of them with those little wooden traps. One always means...many. We certainly missed our West Highland Terrier who had been quite the hunter (thankfully, we were able to teach her not to hurt the bunnies and birds as we had those as pets).

Please don't drown rodents. It's a horrible way to die. Good-quality snap traps are much more humane, they kill the animal instantly in the vast majority of cases.

It's not a pest animal's fault that it's a pest. All animals deserve the respect of a humane death. So-called "humane" live traps aren't necessarily a good option, because they leave someone with a live, scared pest that needs to be killed, as relocation is often impractical or outright cruel. The most humane trap is one that kills the animal as quickly as possible, without letting it suffer.
