Neottia nidus-avis

The bird's nest orchid is the only domestic orchid in Central Europe that lacks chlorophyll completely and is unable to perform photosynthesis. It is fed by a fungus mycel which normally occurs in a mixed beech forest. And the fungus takes food from beech roots. The orchid plant grows slowly belowground (hypogeal) and takes at least 9 years to flower. The root system reminds of a bird's nest, hence the name. A pleasing scent of honey is emitted to attract pollinators, but flowers might also self-pollinate.
Sometimes this orchid is confounded with Orobanche, which is not an orchid.

You are right, Prem, Epipogium aphyllum also lacks chlorophyll and is a leafless mykoheterotroph orchid of Europe. It is very rare in my area.

In fact, Corallorhiza trifida also seems to be found in Germany. I don't know if it's native to your area, but at least it is native to your country.
