Living in a suburban neighborhood, I never expected this!
I have, what I believe to be, a species of Spiranthes! I was about to mow my lawn this morning when lo and behold I come across the weirdest looking weed. Its twisted flowers reminded me of an orchid I saw in my "Wild Orchids of South Carolina" book. It suddenly dawned on me that this "weed" could actually be the orchid I saw. I dashed into the house and have been closely comparing the flowers to the ones described in my book. So far, S. vernalis seems the closest based on bloom time, flower arrangement, etc...
I've been travelling for the past 3 weeks, so that is the most viable explanation as to why I'm just now seeing this plant. Usually, my lawn is mowed once a week.
HOW am I supposed to mow now?!?!?
Can anyone else confirm this is S. vernalis, or point me in the direction of a closer species?

Right time and right place to be S. vernalis, but a pic wouldn't hurt!

Definitely a Spiranthes. There are a bunch of species native to your area, and teling them apart just from a pic can be near impossible, but given the bloom time vernalis is a pretty good guess.

How cool. And I guess you won't be mowing the lawn, instead you will be pulling the grass around said orchid so it will not be competed with.

I'm going to find some of those little wire garden borders, and protect them. Just check that off the list of "Things Crazy Orchid People Say"

I was running around the house trying to find something I could use as scale, and came across the Canadian change I had in my pocket. I just got back from Toronto

Definitely Spiranthes - there are species that bloom at different time of the year. Most of the ones I see locally are late summer - early fall blooming. Not uncommon in lawns here.
