Remember my vandas in trees; they're not anymore!
So I just recently posted a picture of my vandas in trees and the pulley system my husband created for me. We had really high winds and thunderstorms today. I was playing with my girls in their toy room and the power went out. I had the blinds closed because it was so sunny, when the power went out, naturally, I opened the blinds and the sky was pretty dark. The wind picked up very quickly and I was hoping that my orchids wouldn't come flying off of their ropes. I didn't have to think about it for long because a neighboring tree in my yard with some of my other orchids fell onto my pulley system and tree burying my orchids under branches and limbs.
My Vandopsis lissochiloides is in rough shape, I recently acquired it, it was very established in its basket and now it's not in a basket and has broken roots and leaves. We can't find my Vanda Angelica Vale, but we have found pieces of its ceramic pot. My husband was able to find the Vanda merrillii that I searched so hard for, it has a couple of superficial issues, leaves bent and such, but otherwise looks fine. My huge Vanda Roberts Delight is in rough shape. And the list goes on.
I am grateful that my family, pets and house are all safe and unscathed, but I am disappointed about my orchids and all the work that was put into the pulley system that is now gone. I was waiting for my spikes and now I'll be nursing and trying to establish these plants. Oh well that's the way the wind blows (literally).

Oh no
Glad you and the family are all OK, but such a shame about the orchids. Hope you can rescue them.

In Ontario, I once had all of my orchids on shelves on a fence when a tornado went through the town. Oddly enough, not a single one of them fell. Our neighbours all around us had trees down and the hydro was out for some time. Part of the town had a lot of damage.

I'm so sorry about your Vandas and the pulley system. Maybe one of your neighbours will find the lost one in their yard and return it to you. Mother nature is sure pulling some bad stunts lately!

I'm so happy you orchids were all fine. I can only imagine how inconvenient not having water was!

Thank you! The damage to our trees was pretty significant and we had a limb hanging over our solarium (literally a glass room), so we had a tree removal company come out early this morning. My husband stood there and watched as they removed the limbs and branches to recover the missing orchid. It is in really bad shape, but I'll just look at these guys as my challenge plants. The rest of the tree had to come down because of the damage, so I lost my free shade clothes.

Thank you so much! Honestly, it was really frightening to see such a large tree snap like that! My two year old keeps saying, "down, trees fall down".
I completely agree about Mother Nature, love her, but she's being a bit temperamental lately!
