I have always tried to leave yellow leaves on until they decide to come off on their own. Now your experience is burned into my memory. A sad occurrence but one to always remember!
Thanks for sharing - your sacrifice is all our learning!

Well...time to bring this thread to the forefront again

Over the past few days, I've been spotting a number of 'chids in spike! One of them is a Den that I bought at Redlands in May 2006 as a seedling...so exciting to see a spike!!!

The spike was growing towards the back of a middle shelf so it needed to be turned around...can you see where this is going?

SNAP!!! No more spike!!!

...and the long wait begins again

Susanne, I think I can top this I've let it be known that when on vacation my son takes care of the 'chids. He's learning, he's accomplished, he wants to get his own (the real ones as well as the plants ) Then along comes the project orchid with 2 spikes. It was destined to be the winner because the spikes were so advanced and there were two. I was really looking forward to seeing two spikes in bloom. Can you tell what's coming next?

I came home after a trip where he was caring for them and I immediately checked all the 'chids to see how everyone was doing while my wife unpacked the car (I do have my priorities after all ) One of the spikes was just hanging! I checked it and he had broken it off and it was dangling! This last trip he had more specific instructions (watch your hands and don't damage anything) and it is doing well with only one spike.

Actually, no! I use these experiences as teaching oportunities Actually, I don't know what I'd do without his diligence. It's just he didn't know at that time. This last time (last week till today) went very well. I'll be helping him set up his own light stand soon and letting him get used to the ties of having 'chids (I'll leave kids up to his future wife )
