I have a plant that falls into this category, and I'm sorry to say that giving it to another person and having the damn thing bloom right away would REALLY light me up.

I unfortunately kill enough that I don't have to cull my orchids very often. I have given the divisions of a couple very vigorous growers to the local orchid society, they win and I gain some wiggle room on my table.

I found what I think is scale on a plant I've had for about 2 months. I put him in quarantine and know I should toss him but still feel badly about it. If it was my only chid I'd try and save 'em but I don't want to risk exposure (any more than I've already exposed) to the rest of my plants

I had a Beallera that came to me literally covered in scaled. I battle scale with that sucker for 3 years and finally tossed it last fall. No matter what I hit it with the scale would reappear in a few months. That plant could never be under the lights with the other plants, and consequently it never bloomed.

Only you can decide if you are willing to spend endless hours with Q-Tip and alcohol in hand to try and save it (not to mention nasty systemic insecticides to try and kill it from the inside out). Ultimately, for me it wasn't worth the effort.

Ha! I guess I'm a serial killer. I'm ruthless about culling--and 100% of my plants are plants I've paid for. I look at it this way---I may not keep the plant, but I've learned something from it:

1) I can't grow it
2) I don't like it (the blooms or the plant)
3) I won't make the same mistake again.
4) I like other plants much, much more
5) I have too many to properly take care of.
6) It takes too much time and thus not for me.

So I throw out or give it away. I've thrown out healhty plants because I can't find someone to give them to, and I've thrown out sickly/dead plants too.

I really don't feel guilty about it--I take it as a learning experience.

Seriously, I've never thought about coming here because I've always thought people would be offended.

So, I throw away instead. If you all are serious I'll keep this in mind.

Yup. Wish I lived in Florida! I've often wished there was a place for houseplant swaps...
