Moving to Austin, Texas - Orchid Board

Hey all,
Because of the job market (or lack thereof) in Honolulu, I will be moving from Hawaii to Austin, Texas in mid January. I'll need some advice about growing inside during winter because its been like 12 years or so since I have done that. Anyone from Austin? I see they have a society and will be heading there as soon as I move to Texas! It will be good to find out how people in Austin grow their 'chids and learn the local tips and secrets.

Hey Steve,

Great to hear you'll be in our neck of the woods! Leaving HI must be bittersweet. Austin is a good 4+ hour drive from me, but maybe we'll meet at a show one day soon.

I know there is a good, active society there. A few of their members are here on the OB so I'll leave local growing advice up to them. I just wanted to be one of the first to say, howdy!

Leaving Hawaii??? I'm not sure how I'd feel about that!

Thanks Royal! It will be good to meet some more members and any tips you can give me about growing in Texas would be very much appreciated!

Thanks! That is one plant that will definitely be coming with to TX! Those flowers last for months and smell amazing!

Leaving Hawaii will be tough for some reasons, but great for others so it definitely is bittersweet. Hopefully Ill be able to check out some of the FLA shows and maybe the AOS greenhouse!

if I had to leave the islands. Of course the longest I've been there has only been 2 weeks, so I'm sure there are drawbacks to living there full time that I don't know about.

Good luck in Texas and may all your favorite orchids make the trip safely!

I was kind of trying to make a joke. It gets pretty hot here and stays that way for months. Winters are relatively short and mild so your biggest challenge will probably be the heat - or water quality. The hill country is rich in limestone so the water may pose some issues. Again, I'll defer to a local to say for sure. All I know is that warm growers do awesome here and I don't see to many cool growers at shows in this region.

Cool! Good to know. Not a whole lot of cool growing orchids do well at sea level in Hawaii either.
