who else names his/her orchids? c'mon... i know you're out there!
who names his/her plants? wanna share your names/reasons for doing so?
i'm pretty sure this doesn't apply to those who grow a lot of plants, but i started with a few plants which i named and i am now very fond of. i called my first phal 'daphne', for no particular reason. my second alicera i called 'frederika' after a traveller i met, and when i divided it i got 'fred' and now 'wilma'.
even though i've got a new crop of 10 little seedlings, i'm pretty sure i will keep up the name thing. hopefully my brain can keep everybody's names straight! some of the names (like 'annie' for my total orphan... ? den. - i have no idea what it is; it's too small to even guess!) totally stick. all my housemates know my stanhopea jenishana as 'jennie'.... i'm pretty sure they don't know her 'real' name.
i can't be the only one! it will be fun to see what everyone else has to say.....

Great question! I usually take a name from the title of the plant. For example: Phal. Timothy Christopher x Wilsonii is known as "little Tim". Phal. Sogo Vivien x Dtps. Erol 'Flame Tips' is "Vivien". This helps my husband who likes to take pictures but has no idea what the proper names are so the nick names help.

Even when I had only a few orchids I never used 'names', sincerely. Today it would be almost impossible, because I have to many 'chids (fortunately!). BTW I love the name of your second Alicera, Rallygirl! Stan jenischiana was named after Senator JENISCH in Flottbeck near Hamburg, Germany, so I think 'jennie' is a little bit feminine and delicate for HIM...

I don't use special names. I name them just to be able to identify them - white big phal, lilac phal, white small phal, etc....

I only name them if they get awarded, and usually name them after a loved one. The others just have brief descriptions on a tag if they are good quality. Everything else just has it's species or hybrid name.

Nope. I've never considered naming any of my plants anything other than their genus/species or hybrid name. I gave my cats names, but I have to tell them to not to chew on this or get out of that.
