August 09 Monthly Status Report
Hey there everyone! So, I haven't been around as much lately due to being busy with work, and also of course summer languor. But I've been thinking, I haven't seen the monthly status report thing happen in a while, so thought I'd start one off for August!
In Bloom: (only a few)
Dendrobium laevifolium—5 blooms total on 2 bulbs, (the same blooms which opened up back in April/May!)
Maxillaria uncata—currently only has 2 little blooms, but it seems to pick up in the fall/winter to where there's always a new handfull of blooms opening every other week or so.
Phalaenopsis Baldan's Kaleidoscope—received in bloom as a gift in April and still going strong, though has lost two spikes as of now.
Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi—single bloom (it's first) which opened on 7/23. Totally my new favorite!
In Spike:
Ascocentrum pumilum (Intermediate mystery project plant)—just started the beginnings of two spikes. The spikes are *very* slow growing, so it'll be a while before blooms.
Bulbophyllum pardalotum—currently has 7 spikes after it blasted 4. Needed to move it to a place with less air movement, and am keeping it more moist than usual. Blasting seems to have stopped.
Cirrhopetalum tingabarinum (Warm mystery project plant)—just started the beginnings of a spike (and I'm sure of it this time!)
Haraella retrocalla (Spring 09 project plant)—just dropped two blooms from two different spikes, but those spikes are now pumping out another bud each.
(Laelia milleri x L. cinnabarina) x Sophronitis cernua—spike with 3, maybe 4, buds. Really excited for this one!
Leptotes bicolor—Finally. This guy has had some sheathed-over nubbins for a long time on various growths. One of them is finally pushing out a bud. Hoping that the others decide to follow suit!
Masdevallia (vargasii x triangularis)—Never thought I'd do so well with a Masdie. Currently has 6 new spikes with buds in various stages, in addition to 3 old spikes it's held onto that are still green.
Paphiopedilum Hsinying Alien—spike began growing at the end of June, and it continues. Excited because, while it has bloomed previously, this will be it's first bloom in my care, and my first Paph bloom period!
Phalaenopsis lobbii—beginnings of two tiny spike nubbins. Thrilled because this was just in bloom Feb-April.
Phalaenopsis Mini-Mark 'Holm'—this guy is amazing. Has one new spike. Also just finished two spikes in May.
Sigmatostalix costaricensis—very excited, received this as a TC with my Haraella project plant. It is now growing three spikes. Not seeing buds yet, but could start seeing them very soon I think.
Also looking forward to:
Laelia fournieri—currently is still expanding a new growth. But if what happened last year is any indication, it's leaf may start unfolding soon, with a spike already growing inside.
Laelia mixta—currently has one growth in sheath, with something inside. But I'm not sure what it's deal is. Seems to be content for awhile with pushing lots of new root growth.
Sophronitis cernua—just unfolded a new leaf, so crossing my fingers I might see spiking soon??
So. Anyone else who wants to post a status report, please please please post! I've missed these monthly status report threads.

Hey Yvan! Welcome back
I've made the thread a sticky...we haven't had one of these since March, so thanks for getting it started.
My orchid room is being reorganized at the moment but as soon as I get it all back into place, I'll make my list.
Who else has stuff to talk about?

Terri! Nice to have so many in bloom right now! We've had a depressingly less sunny than usual summer over here on the opposite coast. I think some of my 'chids are really lagging behind on the bloom calendar because of it.
Hmm, now why don't I have an Aerangis luteo-alba rhodostica yet...??

Yvan June was like that for us, rainy and gloomy. I think that's why we don't have any ripe tomatoes yet.
It's kind of unusual for some of these plants to be in flower right now. The Aer. normally blooms in late fall....at least for me. (I think you need this one for sure. It's a real cutie!) I'm also a little suprised to see so much action from the Paphs. Seems like they normally bloom late winter to early spring. Some of them I haven't had long enough to know when they are supposed to bloom. I attribute the blooms to the goofy weather we've been having. 60 degrees to 109 degress back to 60 degrees, back up to 90 degrees. I never know how to dress in the morning! I'm sure the plants are confused too!

I think that our long period of very hot weather has set my plants back a bit and also shortened the bloom life of some. Here's what's happening at the moment:
IN BLOOM
Potinara Hoku Gem "Freckles"
Ottara Hwa Yuan Bay "She Shu"
Encyclia Green Hornet
Phal. Sunset
Paph. Yellow Tiger
Paph. Inca Gold Leny X Pittsburg #91
Paph. Rothchildianum Ray X Charles E.
Phrag. Andean Fire
Onc. ornithorrhynchum
Odcdm. Wild Cat "Yellow Cat"
Mexicoa gheisbrechtianum
IN SPIKE
Phal. Brother Buddha X Tinny Redlip "Bedford"
Dtps. Chen Xen Queen

Awesome, guys! I just love that Paph Avalon Mist, Nick. But I'm a big fan of the primulinum crosses. And Shirley, really love the Mexicoa! Been interested in that one for a little while. It's a relatively small grower, right?

OK, so most of mine are NoIDs but so many are in bloom in my living room just now that it's wonderful
In Bloom:
Phal NoID x5
Dtps Sin Yuan 'Golden Beauty'
Paph Maudiae
Unfortunately I can't take credit for the two named hybrids because I bought them in bloom recently.
But the 5 NoID phals are all re-blooms for me and they are just wonderful looking. One of them currently has two main spikes and three side spikes all fully open and it looks sooo wonderful

Yvan, Yes, the Mexicoa is on the small side. I've had it for eight years now and the leaf span is about ten inches. It's been in bloom since early May -- one of my favourites!
