Spike Failure - Gomesa Bronze Medallion
I purchased this plant from Santa Barbara Orchid Estate, mounted, in March (labelled Oncidium Bronze Medallion). It is an SBOE cross.
It started a spike over the summer, and just in the past week the flower buds went from green to yellow, and as I feared it looks like most or all of them won't make it.
This was a developed, budded out spike. Any thoughts on bud blast in a plant like this?
One possibly very relevant detail: I had to take all my plants out of their portable greenhouse and move them to an open area that has much less reliable light. I had them in a spot that seemed quite dark to me, so then I moved them to another area that gets several hours of direct morning sun, pretty warm northern california late summer sun.
Could the moves and the direct sun have blasted the buds? Or is there another common cause of something like this.
Also, if anyone is familiar with this cross or its parents (forbesii x enderianum/praetextum) - I was surprised that the buds seem small. I've never seen any of these in bloom but never thought the flowers would be quite small. So, I'm wondering, was I incorrect about my assumption about size? Or could this have been a mislabelled plant? Or, had the spike done OK, would the buds have kept growing and growing.
Thank you!!
