silken,
Where can you get logs like that? Your display is so pretty! Is it specifically made for orchid growing? I can't remember the name of one such similar log I've seen made specifically for orchids, but they were white and not as realistic.

Thanks PaphLover. I and several other orchid growers ordered a couple each from a lady in Portland, Oregon in 2013. She had been making them for years and they were called EZhydromounts. She made them for orchids and had even won an AOS award for one of her Catts mounted on one. When we determined we liked them, I tried to order more bud sadly she had gone out of business. She had quite a few different sizes and they all looked great. It's too bad and I would have like more for myself. I keep thinking some industrious potter should try their hand at these! They were unglazed porcelain so that they were porous. Then fired onto a glazed base so they stand on their own and collect water in their own base.
I do think you could get a nice small log and fasten it to a base and even though it isn't hollow, it would look very similar and work well for mounting.

There was also a similar product called Swampstick sold at that time. I've been doing some googling and that one seems to be gone also. Guess they were not a hit in the market.
I don't know if there are rules about linking to another orchid site, but there is a discussion of hydromounts on a different site I frequent. I'd be happy to point you in that direction if you are interested.

It won't look as pretty, and if you picked it up you would have a mess, but an unglazed clay drainpipe stood in a dish of water could be filled with water and would function the same.

Here is a link to an old thread on the Orchid Geeks website:
Orchid Forum Orchid Care
This is a discussion of the hydromounts (with pictures) and my Swampstick discovery. Kool-Logs are new to me, but it sounds like it might be similar. I actually have a couple of mounts that are not being used; now I'm thinking of trying them again.
PaphLover, I sent you a private message before I realized that posting a link was okay.

Fantastic setup!!!
It looks like you just cut the log off the habitat and smuggled them in from the Caribbean. lol
I had many but always repeated between buying a bunch and tossing (or giving away) all.
They are so cute and so common here and cheap, so I always buy them (can't resist) in bloom and then out. hehe
I did keep one for over a year and it is now in its second bloom under my care.
Genting Lady or Genting Pink Lady. The great thing about it is that the flowers are fragrant, and the plant makes lots of flowers, so I kept it.

Well, if anyone wants to try making them I will show or give details about them. But basically the unglazed log is open at the top to fill with water. All the styles had 2 or 3 short branches off the main stem. There was even a diagonal reclining one which I was going to try next And the base is glazed with the log being sealed at the bottom so the water doesn't run out at the bottom. It just slowly seeps thru the pores of the porcelain. I used a bit of moss initially to mount and keep them a bit moist but have pulled some away as it got old and raggedy. Its own root ball holds enough moisture now and these like to dry quickly. Some of the roots have attached to the log.
