Cambrias - Hard to find? Male
Default Cambrias - Hard to find?

Hello, my friends

I'm asking this because I've read somewhere that they are not easy to find for sale and are very expensive. A year ago I bought one for less than 10 EU, which is cheaper than any phal for ex. Also, they arw very common around here for sale.

I also have the understanding they are not very considerated in the orchid world because they are "artificially" created and do not exist in the wild.

Just like to know what your opinions and feelings are aboyt these two topics.

In Europe they call any Oncidium alliance hybrid 'Cambria' in the big garden centers and IKEA for example. I disagree that they are not highly regarded, they are clones of beautiful plants and usually pretty easy to grow in the home. I like them very much.

I think the post you saw specifically referred to a red and white Vuylstekeara hybrid. They are not that easy to find in the US because they tend to be cool growers that don't do well as house plants in most parts of the US, much of which is warmer than many parts of Europe.

Ah yes, in this case you are completely right, this is the plant: Vuylstekeara Cambria 'Plush' FCC/RHS. Here's a link to some interesting information about it.

I had a VCP 20+ years ago, unfortunately it had un- noticed brown rot when I bought it.
You do see them every once in a while. Per the book 'Orchids for Everyone', Brian Williams et al., they are intermediate to warm growing.

Today I've found (again) Cambrias for sale in the supermarket.
They looked something like this one, not exactly this one but similar.
The price was 7,8 EURO (approx. 7 USD).

I could have bought it but I need some self-control 'cause I don't have much space left at home.
Also, I don't like to buy orchids in bloom.

I actually have a Vuylstekeara (Cambria) here in New Mexico. (Vuyl. Home Spun Sprite "Saphire Seduction") It is fairly small, has deep red fuzzy star-shaped flowers (Shaped like "Plush"but a solid red). It really did suffer from the heat this past summer. I am going to keep it inside and a little cooler next year.

I looked for pics of the "Saphire Seduction":

These are great, the red is wonderful.

I have a cambria that is about to bloom but I never saw its flowers. In two weeks or less I might post some pics.

This afternoon I almost give up and almost lost control. I went to another supermarket that usually has orchids for sale (mainly phals and cambrias) to look for a cambria (it seems cambria season has begun). I got a discount in that store so I could get a cambria for less than 3 EURO (approx. 3 USD) but there were only a few in need of rescue. I regain my selfcontrol and came out with empty hands.

But...the discount is valid until the end of Nov, so if I have a relapse...
