Growing conditions
It is my understanding that odonts of this type come from the cool cloud forest areas of Colombia, where night time temps are in the 50's-60's, daytimes in the 70's, with lots of cool fog and mist. My growing conditions are not exactly the same, but typically here near the coast of Southern California, winter temps range from low 40's-low 50's at night, only rarely dipping near freezing, daytime temps in the 50's -80's (the later only when we are having Santa Ana winds). Summer day temps can range up into the 80's and low 90's but dip into the 60's in the evenings and usually there is a moist marine layer that rolls in during the evenings, often leaving everything on the patio damp with dew. I have had this plant on my patio on the north side of the garage, so bright light, but only very late afternoon sun are the light conditions. I feed once a week with a weak fertilizer solution and right now I am experimenting with growing this one in a plastic pot with styrofoam peanuts for drainage in the bottom, in a mix of sphagnum and perlite. I have others that I have grown successfully in a mix of coconut chunks and sphag, and others that I have in shredded firbark, aka gorilla hair. All seem to be doing fine.
