Sorry no idea of exactly why it happens? I've had it happen to sharry baby and other oncs.
I too pry the leaves apart as silken does and have also have used bits of polysterene to sort spikes /blooms and or tuters. Also turning towards the light is an other thing I have done in the past. I too have only ever broken a spike. I've learnt to watch very carefully, every day and fix by whatever method inspires me to get it out & grow straight etc...
Hope you manage as it'll be a beautiful show!

The strange thing is that I have other milts in the very same growing conditions all together and some spike normally and easily without ever getting stuck. So I don't feel its really the growing conditions to blame.

Oncidium Sharry Baby did that for me this February. One spike was fine while the other never quite made it out and when I tried to help it, it just snapped off. Would be nice to find the solution of how to prevent it so a remedy could be applied.

ok from my understanding you may be too careful watering and not getting the leaves wet. they need too so that dosn't happen. this is just my observation but on the other hand i do work in an orchid green house.

To me, that makes sense although that never occurred to me. My spike got stuck when I had my milts growing in a conservatory and splashing water around wasn't an option.

I wonder about it being lack of water (a bit like the crinkling of the leaves).

What Bryan says makes sense, as I get leaf crinkling because of underwatering but I don't get this problem and I DO poor water all over the leaves when watering all my oncidium alliance (especially over the summer when they are in the greenhouse).

I was told by someone working in one of the orchid nursarys that doing that was a good way to reduce the leaf crinkling if I'm scared of rotting the roots, but it could also be helping with the spiking

I had this happen with one of my oncidiums last year and this year the spike made it out no problem so at least there's hope that it won't happen in future blooms. I changed soooo many things about my growing conditions in the last year tho so its hard to pin down whether it was any specific thing... Sorry I can't be more help!!
