Butterfly opens its wings!
I've wanted a butterfly orchid for quite some time and last year I went to a show in Jacksonville and found one. It is now in bloom for the first time. It is: Phychopsis Mendenhall 'Hildos".

Very pretty! Me too, i've wanted one for a while so looked for it at the show I went to last weekend. The problem was, the blooming ones were way too expensive and the small ones were freshly deflasked seedlings. But I get the feeling that no matter where I get one, it won't be cheap. I don 't think I've seen one anywhere for less than 30€!

Hi Camille - I don't know how much US your 30 euros would be but I paid $20. US which I didn't think was too bad. It has 4 pseudobulbs, 3 of which has leaves. I didn't think it would bloom for me this year but sure was a nice surprise. Now if she keeps going. Thanks everyone for your comments.

Oh Don, it's beautiful. Aren't those butterflys fun to grow? I just love them. They add such a splash of color and seem to go on forever. You can always see the next bud when the flower fades. Enjoy your new baby, she will give you lots of pleasure.

Hi Don,
Congrats on getting your butterfly to open its wings! It's a beauty for sure!
Your photo is pretty cool too...I like the lighting effect you caught. Thanks for the post!
