Now this should be good! Let me draw you a picture: a 40 foot palm tree requires, what, a 10 foot pot? How does this do in a dining room with north lighting? Then how do we get 40 foot ceilings? My heat bill in the winter is probably higher than your water bill (and A/C besides) in the winter, so, where does this leave me? Think I'll just admire yours and maybe come down and visit if I can ever get free from here when gas is reasonable (less than $4.00). That will only be in winter when the temps are reasonable and the swamps are dry.

That looks great. What direction is the Onc. facing, and is it partially shaded? I've got 5 palms just waiting for orchid mounts.

I say go for it and it doen't matter which side of the tree you use because at the hottest part of the day the plam frons shade the base and trunk of the tree, no matter what position the sun is in or what season it is. I have others on the same tree and everything is growing well. This one is facing North to Northwest.

That is so cool! And the wildcat looks really happy on that tree! I have a friend who really wanted to have something like that, so he made a fake palm tree out of coconut fiber mats and fake fronds, and mounted his bromeliads and orchids on it. The entire thing is build on wheels to move it around and to be able to bring it into the veranda for the winter. It's nice, but a real palm tree would be better!
Do you have photos of your other palm mounted orchids?

I think it is so great to what end folks will go to to accomplish their goals! Have to admit I do the same, although there is a fine line between "accomplished goal" and "tacky".

Would love to see your friends attempt.

I'll try to get pictures, but it may be difficult since he lives across the country from me! I'll do my best. It's not a very tall tree (to get through doorways!) but nice. Last I heard he wanted to set up a misting system along the 'trunk'. Fake epiphytic tree trunks out of coconut fiber is pretty popular in france (or so it seems based on the french version of OB!)
