My grandma always had a broom and a suitcase ready in New Years Eve. The broom to "sweep away" bad luck, and you had to walk a little bit outside with the suitcase to make sure you would travel a lot that year. She may or may not have made up the whole broom story, but her driveway was always clean the 1st day of January.

Since we are talking about practices/superstitions I think it would be nice to exchange the ones that we know..we are from completely different countries and regions, I think it will be interesting.
This one is not related with New Year...my gradma used to burn a branch of rosemary inside her home whenever there was a thunderstorm. She says it will make the storms go away...it always worked!
Also, once during one of those storms, I was feeling happy and started to sing and whistle a song that was constantly on the radio. She asked me to stop because during thunderstorms one should only sing religious songs...I din't knew any so I shut up.

I'm much less concerned with those who enter politics rich than I am with those who leave it richer than when they got there.

My great uncle served in Burma in WWII. While he was there, he acquired a bracelet made of elephant hair. According to the natives it would protect the wearer from tiger attacks. He wore it every day and requested to be buried in it, because as he used to put it " it still works!".

Our family had sooo many traditions that it would take me forever to list them all. Then I married my husband whose family has a completely different set of traditions! I am very haphazard about following any (rarely I do, usually I do not).

I think a lot of them line their own pockets and their friends' pockets with our money. Especially Cheetohead. Maybe a few crumbs will trickle back on down to us. I doubt it.

Coming from a military family, I have learned to respect the Office, if not the person. Please let's keep our political opinions to ourselves.

Lucille, there are no dummies in our family. A close relative was a nuclear physicist. I never heard him demean people and he was world renowned. There is a difference between disrespect, hostility, and free speech. You came here because we were a knowledgeable, friendly bunch. Let's try to keep that going, please.
