Very pretty. I may have the same ones or something very similar. Well I use to have the first one, I killed it. I always called it a fish hook as the spikes were like a fish hook and will get you. My other one I almost killed but it seems to be coming back after I finally re-potted it. It had almost no roots left on it.

It blooms an orange color that I just love. Here are some pictures of barrel cactus blooming last year in the wild. They were just out of this world last year.

Whatever that pink flowering cactus is, I want to have it! It is so pretty and the flowers are large!

That is beautiful, Shannon! It looks like Escobaria vivipara or something similar. Neil, if you're looking for one, some of the better-regarded mail order cactus nurseries are Mesa Garden and Miles 2 Go. Be careful, cacti can be just as addictive as orchids!

Oh, and your pretty orange-flowered one looks like it could be Parodia (formerly Notocactus) haselbergii. Lovely little plants!

BTW, cactiguide.com is an excellent cactus site with a large image library, generally up-to-date taxonomic info, and a very helpful forum. Most of what little I know about Cactaceae comes from there-- the forum is especially great for IDs and culture advice.

Last year we had allot of rain and these little baby's grow on the prairie. This one had more blooms than most of them so I had to take a picture. I found so many over the fence on the neighbors and I would go over there and look at them all. I keep thinking I will dig some up and see how they do inside but have not yet. I love them. Oh by the way this one was on our land.

In the winter they shrink up almost so you can't see them, then in the spring they start growing but they don't get to big. I have seen some get sort of large but I think because they shrink in the winter they have to start all over.

Wow Nat, now I find I have been growing my cacti wrong all these years. No wonder I killed them eventually. I've been looking at those sights you posted.

Look up Pediocatus simpsonii.
