I have kept both lifted tubers and seeds of M. jalapa. The tubers are planted out when danger of frost has past. They bloom earlier than plants from seed. They can have a head start in a greenhouse or cold frame if you have room.

Two other favorites are M. multiflora and M. longiflora. I have kept M. multiflora as a short lived perennial with just a light straw covering from late fall to early spring in U.S.D.A. zone 7b. With the right conditions it reseeds in the garden.

Mirabilis longiflora, Angel Trumpets/Fairy Trumpets/Sweet Scented Four O'Clock, has the most arresting scent at dusk!

I have a bunch of them growing on the east facing side of my house. They have survived zero degree temps, searing summer temps, no water for days. Total neglect in other words. They reseed profusely, and are impossible to totally get rid of. In other words, a perfect plant for 'impossible spots'. I love them!
