Default Striped Jumping Spider

Saw this little spider around the porch. They are beautiful animals.

Don't know the species name. It'd be cool to find out what it is specifically.

Cool! I see some around that look like this - I think I have some pix of one on a a Cym.

I have found the large-ish, heavy bodied, black jumping spiders seem to just loooove living on, or near my orchids! It's VERY startling when one jumps out when I water!

hehe - i don't mind those guys - outside where they belong....in my kitchen - well its a death sentence. We ocassionally see a wolf spider set up shop outside in our yard - those are pretty cool looking spiders and very big too! when they do pop up, we have to watch out because the webs tend to be about face height - ewww...

I really like the stripes! I am the one that always has to put the spiders outside when they come indoors. I enjoy them all but my favorite are the orb-web spiders.

Nah. Wolf spiders don't make webs. They're active predators, not sit and wait predators. Sounds like when the wolf spiders are out, so are the spiders that do spin webs, so those get you in the face.

I have the big black ones with white markings on their backs. They love the greenhouse.
They run out and stare at me when I'm in there....I guess I'm invading their territory.

They are called the Bold (or Daring) Jumping Spider.

Yeah - these guys
Some have an orange/red spot rather than white ...
They just loooooooooooove my orchids! Very startling when they jump out of the plant/pot you just picked up!

That's for sure they really have a lot of personality.
I've been told that the orange/red spot ones are the juveniles.

I feel like I'm somewhat near you, Sonya, from some things in your posts, but I sure am glad I've never encountered these. I would probably boycott my orchids if I did!

Hmm...perhaps both you and Maureen are further north and that's why. Either way, I am glad I don't have them. Hehe.

I rarely see our orb spiders down here. When I do, they are pretty intimidating. Just the body itself is about a couple inches long.

They're gorgeous.

Wow.

They're pretty big.

Really cool.

They do look like they've got quite a personality.
