I buy from a cut flower vendor who appears every saturday in my local farmer's market (I think the guy comes from Pennsylvania). He mostly focuses on amazing fresh cutflowers (lilies, mostly, but tulips and hyacinths in the spring), but in the fall or early spring, he also brings lots of potted amaryllis, all named and in super healthy condition. the price is the same, $20.
So I always pick up a few from him.
The quality is always the best!!!!
My two Show Masters are from him.
I got lots from him but since my favorites are Aphrodite and Show Master, I only keep these two varieties and others only stay while they are in bloom.
As much as I would love to keep them all, they take up way too much space for me and they are readily available.
oh, well...
So your bulb sounds like one of those jumbo sized bulb that as big as a child's head??
Mine is about 40cm around, which is a lot bigger than any commercially available bulbe size (28-32cm being the largest ones offered).
I think they get really big under good care.

Wow, I wish I had someone like your vendor around here.
Yes, that big, and I think I paid twelve dollars for it two years ago. They were more this year. Some of them were smaller bulbs. One of them was untagged, but so interesting. The stalk gets red stripes and splotches to it as it emerges and grows. They are less apparent once it blooms. It is nice to watch

If you have a car, you can drive down here on saturday in the fall and pick up a bunch! well, one has to be really crazy about amaryllis to put in such efforts I guess. lol
but his stuff is so good I only buy from him. local and nicely priced.
The only amaryllis that were under $10 were the those kits sold in Whole Foods or other big box stores. unfortunately, I never had good experience with them. The bulbs are usually well spounted and all crooked in the small box they were forced in. I feel so bad for them.
bulbs are quite small and do not look so good.
Your description sounds like your amaryllis has red blotch fungual infection. It can appear as red dots or streaks of various sizes, appear anywhere from inside the bulbs, leaves, flower stalk and roots. It is very common actually. not desirable though as it can severly weeken the plants and eventual death.
mild care is mostly just aesthetics, but they do spread.
It can be easily treated with fungicide with copper in it.
Prevention is always the best as with any disease.
Good strong sun and lower humidity keeps the fungal issues down. This disease commonly hit the amaryllis crops grown outside in the fall when the weather gets cooler, less sunny days, more moisture.
In the greenhouse, it appears throughout the year.
The ones I see sold at flower distric here, many of them have this disease. Some of them have lots of red blotching on the lower part of the scapes that the scapes bend over. Who would pay $20 for such plant??? lol

I wonder where in PA they are from. That might be easier and closer then city traffic...lol
I won't buy those kits either. I buy amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs and force them myself. I really love paperwhites too. They are only good for one forcing though.
Thank you for that tip. Here I thought it was part of the variety...duh.
Which fungicide with copper do you use? I only have Physan 20 right now

I don't use fungicide. I don't have red blotch issues.
but big box stores sell fungicide with copper in it.
I'm not certain about the effectiveness of physan 20. I've used on some of my oncidiums two years ago for the leaf spots, but physan 20 didn't do anything.
but you can try and see if it works.
Is the red are on your amaryllis deep seated or on the surface? Red blotch causes some sort of crust on the surface. If you have red coloring inside the leaves and this is toward the base of the leaves, then it is just normal for red flowering varieties.
I hope this is clear. or you can google up some images under red blotch disease on amaryllis and see for yourself.
Unless it is sever, you can increase the light and water and feed it good, avoid high humidity or wetting of leaves too much.
If too bad, then first removed the affected area as it continues to release fungal spores.

Amaryllis with emerging flower scape
NYCorchidman: Did I understand you to write that you throw away the bulbs after blooming for lack of space? Send them to me, I'll be more than glad to pay postage + whatever you wish. I can plant them outdoors in my climate and I just love amaryllis.

That's right. I buy many of them each year and then do not keep them after flowers are done.
The problem of sending them over is that they are all in growing mode with huge leaves and roots. They will get damaged in the process.
I dumped my Dancing Queen the othre week and now I'm thinking of Benfica, dark red, I like it but it's readily available and I like to try different reds each year.
I have Ambiance that hasn't initiated any leaves yet for almost two months after flowering, which is strange but the bulb feels firm. that one would be easy to ship.

It was given the name without bloom. I have surfed the internet and found mine was more like Lemon Lime. I will check with name with the seller.

I didn't bring mine in from the greenhouse until late this year, but it's got going pretty quickly and has a flower scape emerging.
The two bulbs are connected, the one on the left being a smaller one that grew off the side of the first. I've had this since 2007 when someone gave it me as a gift. 2011 I didn't water very well and it didn't flower in 2012. I didn't do particularly well watering it last year either but it seems to be managing some sort of flowering at least

Wow~ that bulblet is pretty big!
One of my Showmasters also generated a side bulb although I cannot see it since it's buried deep inside the mother bulb. I do see three leaves of it though.
Two were made toward the end of growing season last fall and now it is adding one more.
Yeah, Amaryllis with so many large leaves, can dry up so fast especially in the summer, so I have to make sure I water mine daily or every other day at the least.
