Gerberas are my favourite!! Beautiful I had some in the garden for a couple of years, but we had a really bad winter and they didn't make it

Luckily, my boyfriend buys me cut flowers quite regularly so I still get to enjoy them!

lovely- I love my Gerbera daisies
Jenny - my Gerberas sometimes seem to "die back" after frost or freeze, but they come back - if it wasn't too cold, maybe yours will come back ?

I'm afraid WhiteRabbit, I think snow and ice got the better of them as they didn't come back last year I may try them again sometime in a different spot (i.e. closer to the house for shelter and try to insulate them over winter), but I'm experimenting with some lovely blue Hepaticas this year

Gerberas will die back. Mine do that all the time.

They have a tap root system much like a carrot. And that tap root is what stores energy and water during dormancy.

These guys are originally from South Africa, so they have seasonal rain patterns that they live by. Hybrids are kinda difficult to tell which rainfall pattern they go by unless you know where the parents came from.

Generally there're summer rains or winter rains depending on which part of South Africa they're from.

Free draining medium is best. South Africa is chock full of sandstone.

Thanks. In Taiwan, they are consider cool growing plants. They bloom well in autumn and winter.
But they seem to dislike the humid hot summer here.

My crazy Gerbera that I grew from seed years ago bloomed during January, just before the coldest part of the winter this year. It usually waits till early spring to bloom. It puts up one flower which keeps well and when that one bloom is finished that's all for the year.
Other Gerberas I have bought as plants do not do as well, maybe, as someone mentioned they prefer cool weather. By the time they are available here it may be too late for them to survive our very hot summers.
